One of the best games in history still evokes warm and nostalgic feelings among those who played it. And those who didn’t pass can do it for three main reasons:

  1. The huge map of Lost Haven is filled with diverse and magnificent places. Each area has a peculiar look, has its own unique atmosphere and even musical accompaniment.
  2. The core gameplay can be summarized simply by saying that it consists of shooting and driving in a third-person perspective. However, in reality, it offers much more: from a variety of missions to dialogue and interaction with the many NPCs that inhabit the streets of The City of Lost Heaven.
  3. Unusual and very beautiful main musical theme, created under the direction of the Czech composer Vladimir Simunek, and with the participation of the Bohemian Symphony Orchestra.

The only weak point in the game is the imperfect AI of the hero's enemies and companions. On the other hand, the fact that the Lost Haven cops aren't geniuses adds to the realism.

10 Red Alert

Gamers fell in love with Red Alert not only as an excellent strategy, but also as a game that has collected the largest number of stereotypes about Russians. An alternate world in which the Soviet Union launched a full-scale attack on Europe through tank hordes and war bears. Add pathos music here, the destroyed Statue of Liberty and, of course, the Soviet general raising a glass of vodka for Comrade General. Here is the perfect recipe to bring a smile to the Russian-speaking part of the gaming community.

9. Dark Souls

Dark Souls is remembered not only for its "old-school gameplay", but also for its dark fantasy world, saturated with loneliness and death. The hero has to go through a difficult path, where one wrong move can end his life, and a meeting with any monster can be the last. A few encounters with NPCs and respite by the fires are perceived as a small ray of light in the realm of darkness. Dark Souls is constant play with death, but that's what she fell in love with gamers.

8. The Elder Scrolls

Series games Elder Scrolls was able to create one of the most memorable worlds in the classic fantasy genre. Huge cards, strewn with small details, a story comparable in scale to Tolkien's Middle-earth universe, libraries full of books and taverns full of rumors, cunning political games of mortals and endless intrigues of immortals. And one hero, free to go wherever he wants.

7. Machinarium

The quest from Amanita Design tells its story in the scenery of a rather strange city inhabited by intelligent machines. Players remember Mashinarium not only for its mysteries and history, but also for the world of robots, soaked through with engine oil, rust and touching stories of living pieces of iron. The game won the Excellence in Visual Art category at the 12th annual Independent Games Festival and is considered one of the benchmarks for independent games, and by many who have played it, a work of art.

The post-apocalyptic world of Fallout was remembered not only by the endless desert, but also by the atmosphere of the 60s of the last century, or rather the world that survived a nuclear war in the minds of the inhabitants of the times of the "Caribbean crisis". As if from the pages of magazines of the past era came "Nuka-Cola", the design of cars and weapons. Radioactive sand, gangs of marauders, the Chosen One, in whose hands the salvation of the world. Black Isle Studios gave us a game inspired by Roger Zelazny's Mad Max and Damnation Valley. And of course, the player will remember for a long time the image of the game's symbol, a smiling boy from educational pictures and videos, cheerfully holding his thumb up.

5. Aracanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

The world of steam and magic. Troika Games was able to successfully combine the industrial revolution of the Victorian era and the classic fantasy setting with orcs and elves in one game. The era of steampunk is coming, guns and guns are replacing swords and spells, the first Zephyr airship is already proudly soaring into the sky, but the world is still full of ancient and powerful artifacts, and any enterprising necromancer can establish his own manufactory using the labor of raised zombies. A huge world, music filled with the cry of a violin, and complete freedom for an explorer-adventurer.

4 Bioshock

First-person shooter, made in the genre of dystopia and based on the philosophical view of the American writer Ayn Rand, set out in the book "Atlas Shrugged". The player watches the fall of the ideal world created by millionaire Andrew Ryan. Irrational Games was able to accurately convey the atmosphere of a dying city, soaked through with human vices. Bioshock is a smart, scary shooter that tells us a tragic story in the entourage of the 50s of the last century. In 2013, Bioshock Infinite was released, taking the setting from the underwater world to the skies and telling a story in the spirit of a classic sci-fi novel.

3. Silent Hill

One of the most famous game series created by Keiichiro Toyama. A deserted city capable of bringing to life the dark essence of the people who fell under its influence. The gray fog that has enveloped Silent Hill is fraught with monsters created by the subconscious of the heroes. The musical accompaniment, written by Akira Yamaoka, adds even more gloom and hopelessness to the atmosphere of the game. " Some things we forget and some we never forget.", - says one of the characters in the game. This phrase was able to fully characterize Silent Hill. A city of nightmares, from which one does not want to return.

2. Max Payne

We say Max Payne - we mean noir, we say noir - we mean Max Payne. Remedy Entertainment was able to create an almost perfect game. The tragic story of a police officer, told through stylish comic cutscenes, gunfights in the best traditions of John Woo action movies, title theme music And end credits the second part of the game that made the band Poets of the Fall world stars. The combination of these factors easily forced gamers to be transported to the snowy streets of New York and watch the fall of Max.

1st place - Elite

The game that won thousands of hearts back in 1984, with a minimal plot and a fairly simple graphic component, is able to immerse gamers in the cockpit spaceship and give you maximum freedom of action. Players could easily engage in trade, piracy, be explorers and pioneers of deep space. The game engine could generate 281,474,976,710,656 unique galaxies, each of which could have 256 stars, while the game weighed 22 kb. However, the publishers felt that users were unlikely to believe in such features of the game, so a limit of 8 available galaxies was introduced.

Elite was able to acquire numerous myths and legends. What was worth only the story of the mythical planet Raxxla, the search for which was persistently pursued by the fans, despite the statements of the creators that this planet is fiction. The steering wheel of a spaceship, endless space and a feeling of complete freedom - all this Elite gave to its fans back in 1984.

Computer games have always been considered the most colorful and effective way out of the reality of gray everyday life. PC Gamers made a list of the most atmospheric games. In these games, one hundred percent harmony of light, sound and environment.

Blade Runner

Unfinished, but very ambitious project from the company Westwood. In the best traditions Ridley Scott and futuristic cyberpunk. Los Angeles has never been so real unreal.

L.A. noire

The same Los Angeles, only in the 40s. Manic attachment Rockstar to the details played a role. As a result, we got one of the most unforgettable games.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

The zone is the queen of atmosphere. The gloomy post-apocalyptic world left no one indifferent. An endless world with great potential, where games are simply made to be played again.

Alien: Isolation

Rough and lopsided technologies of 1970. Across the Sevastopol space station, the legacy of the original Scott echoes. A tense, all-consuming atmosphere of fear.

Dear Esther

There will never be too many games about the Hebrides. And what could be better than a mysterious story in gray, weathered Scotland?

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

All games from Ubisoft are quite atmospheric. But Black Flag does take the player to another dimension.

bioshock

The underwater city is a serious application for atmospheric. Skyscrapers languidly reflecting through the dark layers of water. The inanimate has never been so beautiful.

Dark Souls

Wherever you go while in Lordran, you can feel the breath of history everywhere. This is not just a game, it is an excursion into the ancient secrets of the world.

A beautiful world, bright in the light of day. But mostly grey, gloomy and deadly. The atmosphere is like in Stalker. Who said it's bad.

We are used to seeing the end of the world and nuclear explosions from the front rows. But not in the game DEFCON. We are on the other side of destruction. Where the war is being waged.

Fallout 3

The third part of the game was exactly what the developers intended from the very beginning. A wonderful world full of adventures.

Everyone remembers the night fights in this game? So during the day this game is just as beautiful.

Gone Home

The way things should really work. A moving, flashing, living monument to Fullbright.

Half Life 2

I never would have thought that the setting of this game would be in some European city. City number seventeen is a delightful mix of abandoned streets, ruined houses and fading history.

Hotline Miami

besotted. Fairy. Neon. And everything would be fine, but the soundtracks said their last word in the verdict - very atmospheric.

Kentucky Route Zero

An abstract, sometimes completely incomprehensible game, very similar to the films of David Lynch. Pixelhunting is perfectly saved by the plot and atmosphere.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Snow-capped mountains, icy streams, ringing spring air and blazing sunsets. Bethesda has broken all the records for the development of the environment.

Portal 2

Everything in this game is perfect. Painful perfectionism.

Sunless Sea

A good example of successful storytelling and staging.

take on mars

If you've ever wondered what it's like to be the only person on the planet, take on mars- the best option.

It is easy to believe in the reality of events if we watch some drama about a divorce or a life passing aimlessly. Another thing is to convince the viewer, and in our case the player, that this blue-skinned elf is actually worried about her missing father, who can control the forces of nature. Today, we choose games that stand out for their impeccable atmosphere, even if their world is not at all like the real one.

bioshock

It's not the first time the series of shooters has been included in our selection, but it certainly deserves it. BioShock 1 and 2 take place in the underwater city of Rapture, which was inhabited by prominent people in the 1950s. The best scientists, doctors, artists, musicians and thinkers are tired of the imperfection of the familiar world and decided to retire to the bottom of the ocean.

Rapture is a utopian city, which its inhabitants destroyed. A substance capable of developing superpowers turned into a powerful drug, which led to disaster and the decline of the city. Rapture combines gloss and dirt: expensive furniture is stained with blood, marble floors are covered with salt water, a mutilated corpse sits at a shiny piano.

Place and time of action BioShock Infinite changed: the new hero is sent to the air city of Columbia, and the events unfold in 1912. The city only seems to be prosperous: the locals have even more skeletons in their closet than the inhabitants of Rapture. Both worlds of BioShock are worth exploring: this is one of the most atmospheric and elaborate series.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

A rare case when the game "based on" was worthwhile. Howard Phillips Lovecraft is one of the most enigmatic writers of the twentieth century. The author did not receive much recognition during his lifetime, but his work acquired a cult status after his death. Reading these works is like making your way through the forest through thick fog. You hear the crackling of branches and rustles nearby, but you don’t understand whether it’s a squirrel, a drunken mushroom picker, a bear, or something worse. The same sensations arise when passing call of Cthulhu.

The developers surprisingly accurately conveyed the atmosphere of the writer's stories. It's leisurely and dark game, from which sometimes goosebumps run through the body. Horror scares not with sudden screams, but with a quiet whisper from around the corner. Not a jumping monster, but a dead girl who just stands covered in blood and stares at you. The entourage is formed thanks to the conversations of the characters, the well-developed locations, and the terrible details of the events. Detective Jack Walters will regret more than once that he undertook to investigate the case in the quiet town of Innsmouth, but it will be too late.

Far Cry Primal

Action Far Cry happened on tropical islands, and in sultry Africa, and in the Himalayan mountains. After the fourth part, the developers have chosen an unexpected setting - primitive. There are practically no games in such surroundings, you can immediately recall only Zeno Clash, but there is a share of fantasy there. Here everything is more or less detailed, although it is impossible to check the realism in any case.

We are assigned the role of a representative of an almost extinct tribe, who revives the settlement and is preparing to repulse the enemies. The gameplay is tied to hunting, and this eventually becomes boring: after all, tracking down animals was only one of the elements gameplay in Far Cry 3-4, and not the main ones. And here there is little variety: either get the skins, then collect the leaves, then kill the enemy squad.

But the atmosphere is excellent: nature has not yet been touched by people, mammoths walk through the fields, saber-toothed tigers and other long-extinct animals are found in the forests. You can wander around for hours and just take screenshots for your desktop.

Red Dead Series

The cowboy action line didn't start with Red Dead Redemption, but with Red Dead Revolver. But the games are practically unrelated: different time of action and characters. In the original action movie, the hero Red takes revenge on the gangsters for the murder of his parents, while John Marston from the new action movie tries to save his family by eliminating his former gang colleagues. Red Dead Redemption 2 should be released in the fall, there is no information about the connection with the previous parts.

In the games, the territory and characters are well developed, the locations are full of interesting little things and random events. It would seem that what can happen practically in an open field? You ride calmly on a horse, looking at the setting sun, and suddenly you fall into an ambush, then you stumble upon a hermit, then you see how the Indians deal with the pale-skinned. Rockstar, the developer of GTA, knows how to make rich worlds: there is more life in the prairie of Red Dead Redemption than in the metropolis of Chicago from some Mafia 3.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

The series is based on the story Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers. On this moment the franchise has three games plus a ton of fan-made extras. Ukrainian GSC Game World made "our Fallout", which played on its popularity.

The disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has spawned a new business - both dangerous and lucrative in equal measure. The release of radioactive substances provoked the appearance of artifacts that give bonuses to characteristics and are required, among other things, for scientific purposes. This is how stalkers appeared, hunting for valuable substances.

Key objects of the Zone are recreated on a large territory: a giant radar, the town of Pripyat with the same Ferris wheel, a dump of abandoned equipment that participated in the operation after the accident, and the nuclear power plant itself. On dead lands there is still a life that for many stalkers lasts for best case a couple of days. The atmosphere is oppressive, but you definitely want to visit this place.

bloodborne

Dark Souls, a popular series from the same developers, can also be added to this list. Games are sometimes compared, but there are still differences. First of all, they have different combat systems - Dark Souls is slower. But what they have in common is complexity. The developers have made very difficult conditions for the player their “trick”: tips are sometimes even more confusing, sometimes it’s not clear what they want from us and where to go, enemies are killed in just a few blows, and bosses reach the size of the Trinity house.

The protagonist arrives in the city of Yharnam, where medicine has reached great heights: doctors have learned to cure diseases by blood transfusion. But because of the epidemic, people began to turn into monsters. We have to clean the city and figure out what is really happening here. The locations are impressive in their beauty, despite the general gloomy state of Yharnam. The game, like BioShock, shows an aesthetic mixed with dirt in the literal and figurative sense.

mass effect

The space epic captivates with the scale of events and detailed study of the universe. Despite the abundance of races, planets and conflicts, everything looks very reasonable. Detailed descriptions creatures and difficult relationships between species, the reasons for the aggression of one side or another - during the game there are almost no moments at which you can catch the writers.

BioWare should be blamed only for the same type of structure of their games: what mass effect that in Dragon Age the hero needs to assemble a squad of fighters, fulfill (not necessarily) all their wishes and then go to the main reptile. Captain Shepard and his crew will visit many planets - snow-covered, covered with greenery, volcanic, incinerated by the rays of the sun. Although many of them turn out to be corridors, a tenacious plot, interesting dialogues and situations are kept at the screens for a long time.

Fallout

A nuclear war did not destroy humanity, but completely changed its behavior, lifestyle, and priorities. What remains of Maslow's pyramid of needs is actually the base - basic needs, such as satisfaction of hunger. Judging by the world of Fallout, people in the Wasteland will never be able to get close to at least the third step.

It is customary to evaluate video games according to certain, tangible criteria - graphics, sound, gameplay, plot elaboration, and so on. But there are projects that can be a failure in all respects, and at the same time adored by millions of gamers. Such games attract with a thick, enveloping atmosphere that contributes to complete immersion in virtual world. We will talk about them in this collection.

24.Heavy Rain

A month ago, this game could not have made it to our top atmospheric games on PC, but now that the PC version has been announced, we simply cannot but include it in the list. from the studio will tell you the story of completely different characters, who are united by one thing - a serial killer, nicknamed the "Origami Master". The dark plot, which through the choices made can lead to one of several endings, is complemented by a thick atmosphere of hopelessness from the feeling that a dangerous maniac is always one step ahead.

23. Half Life 2

22 Mafia 1-2

21. Bioshock Trilogy

Each Bioshock game in its own way brilliantly demonstrates the setting in which its events unfold. Whether it is underwater Rapture or heavenly Colombia, in any case, you will plunge into the thick atmosphere of the era, feel the mood of decline and hopelessness, hiding behind the screen of idleness and luxury. This is facilitated by both the visual style and the plot, as well as minor details - a random phrase dropped by an NPC, an audio diary found in a box, a corpse lying in the gateway.

20. Dead Space

19. Dilogy Tom Clancy's The Division

18. Sunless Sea

Exploring the murky waters in a universe reminiscent of Lovecraftian horror - what could be more exciting and frightening? Sunless Sea invites you to take control of a steamship and embark on an unforgettable journey across an ocean that hides many nightmarish monsters. If you love games focused on survival and exploration, then this project may be exactly what you were missing.

17. This War of Mine

Surviving in a city engulfed by civil war is not an easy task. Especially if you have never been a fighter, hiding in a dilapidated house and constantly thinking about how to feed a dozen hungry mouths under your care. This War of Mine is a game in which you will have to look at war from a different perspective. Not the one where it's so fun and exciting to shoot at enemies, but one that makes you search buildings in search of canned food, risking getting shot or running into marauders. Perhaps the most powerful anti-war statement in the gaming industry.

16 Alien: Isolation

The space station is the perfect place for a good horror movie. Just throw in a few crazy androids and one deadly Alien who behaves so intelligently that you have almost no chance of survival. This is exactly what the authors of Alien: Isolation did, presenting one of the most frightening games recent years. Everything works for the atmosphere here: the universe, recognizable environment, terrible enemies, and even the name of the main character - yes, you have to play as the daughter of the same Ripley from the classic quadrology.

15 Assassin's Creed Odyssey

14. Metro 2033/Last Light/Exodus

Each game in the Metro series is an excursion into the world. Let this world be shown somewhat pretentiously, hypertrophied, but nevertheless it feels familiar to every gamer living in the countries of the former. Particularly successful in this field was the third part of the line - Metro Exodus, the events of which go beyond and show how the fate of the survivors east of the capital has developed.

13 Resident Evil 2

12. Limbo/Inside

The stories that lie behind the plots of the games from the Playdead studio must be thought out on your own. You will spend more than one day trying to understand what exactly the developers wanted to say, what goals the characters pursue, and what generally happens in these universes. But even if you can't unravel all the mysteries of Limbo and Inside, you can't argue with the fact that these games leave a lasting impression.

11. RESIDENT EVIL 7 biohazard

The latest numbered part of the RESIDENT EVIL 7 line for 2019 performs on a slightly different field than its predecessors. Here, the developers took as a basis a horror about a house somewhere in the rural outback, the owners of which are not at all happy with uninvited guests. Each member of this crazy family will be remembered for a long time, and the first-person view will make boss fights as frightening and atmospheric as possible.

10. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

A project from the British studio Ninja Theory. The developers set themselves an unusual goal for the gaming industry - to visually present the mental disorders of a person to gamers. And they succeeded one hundred percent: thanks to excellent graphics with an abundance of special effects and very high-quality sound, immersion in the mind chambers of the main character, a warrior named Senua, happens very organically and frighteningly believable. Together with the girl, the player makes a journey through Celtic myths, and it is simply impossible not to feel the atmosphere of the enchanting world created by the authors.

9.Firewatch

8.Beholder

7. Dark Souls

Anyone who has ever suffered in the dark worlds Dark Souls will definitely include them in the list of the most atmospheric games on PC. The mysterious universe, full of unexplored secrets, both attracts and repels, and the numerous ones hiding in the shadows are always ready to punish the careless traveler who so imprudently wandered into their domain. All sets are known for their high difficulty, but those who can overcome all the difficulties will discover the fascinating history of the fallen world.

6. Alan Wake

One of the most atmospheric thrillers in the gaming industry, as if descended from the pages of Stephen King novels. The American outback, the writer trying to find his missing wife, and the creatures of Darkness crawling out at nightfall - such adventures are remembered for a long time. Let Alan Wake not be as scary as other horror games, but in terms of immersion in the world invented by the developers, this project is able to give odds to many of its competitors.

5. L.A. noire

Rockstar knows how to create atmospheric projects, and Detective L.A. Noire, offering players to investigate crimes in the 40s, occupies a leading position among them.

The main character, a police detective, will have to expose murderers, rapists, swindlers, arsonists, and the facial animation system, revolutionary for its time, allows you to monitor the facial expressions of the characters and determine whether they are honest with the investigator or are cunning, hiding important information. Every aspect of the game is a virtual Los Angeles, story missions, - is made with strict quality requirements and attention to the smallest details, which contributes to the deepest immersion in game world.

3. The Witcher

When compiling the top of the most atmospheric games on PC, one cannot but include this role-playing series in the selection. The Poles from CD Projekt RED managed to transfer the fictional universe by Andrzej Sapkowski to the screens, while maintaining the unique Slavic flavor and medieval atmosphere with a touch of fantasy.

The third part of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt saga deserves special mention - here the game developers jumped above their heads by implementing huge world filled with exciting quests, dangerous monsters and charismatic characters. In this game, you can easily forget about the main goal and go about your business - playing Gwent in taverns, exploring the swamps on horseback on Roach, having an affair in brothels, looking for hidden robbers, fulfilling witcher contracts. It's no surprise that with all this, many consider The Witcher 3 the best RPG decades on PC and consoles.

2. Grand Theft Auto

If even those who do not play horror know about Silent Hill, then everyone is familiar with it. The franchise created by the studio has become a real cultural phenomenon that has broken far beyond the gaming industry. The secret of success is high-quality gameplay with complete freedom of action, a detailed world with a parody of modern society, a carefully written script and a huge number of little things that make the universe alive and believable.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Yes, the game is riddled with bugs, the life simulation system is far from what the developers promised, and the plot sags in places - but how good is the atmosphere here!

Traveling around the Zone, it is tempting to leave everything and just enjoy your stay in this harsh, but very beautiful world: listen to anecdotes of stalkers around the campfire, walk through the streets of an abandoned city, help a single traveler fight off a pack of pseudo-dogs. The franchise has already celebrated its tenth anniversary and is now suitable even for weak PCs, despite the fact that at the start it was far from democratic system requirements, but players do not forget about it, releasing custom modifications with new locations, stories and characters - is this not an indicator of people's love?

Conclusion

It was very difficult to compile this rating, because there are much more favorite projects than it included. However, we managed to choose the best atmospheric games on PC, but you can add to our selection or argue with us in the comments. After all, each list is subjective, and where one sees only a set of pixels, the other sees the “soul”.
