Game process

The game has two game modes: survival and adventure, however, only survival mode has direct access to the game. By choosing a character that has their own unique abilities, as well as setting up the world, the player can begin to survive. The character appears in an unspecified place, where he is met by Maxwell, who advises him to look for firewood.

The very goal of the game is to survive in a randomly assembled world as long as possible. In this case, the player has two endings: death and saving Maxwell. The first occurs when the player has zero hit points. The second requires five pieces of a portal that will enter another world, announcing the end of the previous one, but if you do not survive there, you will return to the normal world, in the same place, with the same things and on the same day. A consequence of long survival is character unlocking, which requires experience points. The more days lived, the more points. There are exceptions, but more on them later.

Each day is divided into three intervals: day, evening and night (some intervals may not be, depending on the settings of the world). During the day, the player can lead a normal life: collect items, interact with other creatures, eat, explore, etc. Evening is a warning before night: the player can also conduct business, but he needs to think and prepare everything in order to survive the night. Unlike the day, only in low light and a decrease in the character's sanity. When night falls, the player cannot see anything. Moreover, the character goes crazy faster, and the night monster named Charlie (formerly Gru) will not let him stay idle. For a long time almost nothing was known about Charlie. She was Maxwell's assistant when he worked as a magician prior to the game's main story. Charlie's gender and human nature was first revealed by Kevin (Klei lead developer) in one of the live streams. This monster can deal with the character in a couple of blows, which leads to inevitable death. To avoid this, a light source is needed; often this is fire. Charlie is afraid of the light, which plays into the hands of the player. However, he needs to ensure that the light source does not go out.

The character has three main parameters: health, satiety and sanity. The first one is the most important. The player must monitor the availability of health points, otherwise the character will die. Health decreases when someone hits the character, with frostbite and overheating. The satiety value indicates how full the character is. It can be replenished by eating food. Nullification of satiety does not lead to instant death, but gradually reduces health. Sanity has nothing to do with health, but if it is low, then nightmares will appear that can cause real damage to the character. Sanity is lowered at night (under any circumstances), when the character is near monsters, and also when eating stale or raw food. The lowering of the mind will provoke the appearance of visual and sound factors that are not real. Sanity can be increased by picking flowers, sleeping, cooking green mushrooms, or cooking special dishes that increase sanity (toffees, dumplings).
The player must be active in order not to die: build, get food, make friends and destroy enemies, learn new things with the help of science and more.

Adventure Mode

This mode can only be accessed through the "Maxwell's Door" (not a portal), which leads to the worlds of cruel tests. Unlike the portal, the player cannot take items from the survival world into the adventure. The adventure is divided into six chapters. However, their order is chaotic except for the last two. In the first five chapters, the goal is to find five pieces of Maxwell's portal, which can be found using a special device that must be placed in a special slot next to the portal after assembling the latter. It should also be noted that the worlds are generated randomly.

Cold reception

Generated by chapter 1 - 3.

The player wakes up next to the search wand. The first level is a more or less normal world in general, except for the constant bad weather and the lack of berry bushes. The weather cycle changes quickly and frequently. You are more vulnerable to madness and frostbite, as you must constantly face rain and snow (rains are more frequent, winter lasts three days, summer six days). Sometimes it rains from frogs. The evening is getting longer. At this level, you should feel similar to the survival level, but with a reduction in all your resources.

winter king

Generated by chapter 1 - 3.

The player spawns in the Glade biome. Maxwell says that the endless winter has already begun and sets fire to the trees around the player to prevent freezing during dialogue. The player has one and a half - three minutes of daytime before the frostbite effect appears, which will constantly annoy you in this harsh world. The level contains mounds of hounds, which can be recognized by the bones of animals on the ground. They usually occupy a small area of the island, mostly on the isthmuses that you need to go through in order to collect all the parts of the portal. Cyclops deer will appear around the seventh - ninth day. If you hear a hiss, you can avoid meeting him by leaving the area where you heard him. This will prevent him from respawning elsewhere. However, the eye of the Cyclops-Deer can help the player after passing the obelisks, but fighting him you will most likely lose more than you gain. This applies to both wear and tear of armor and weapons, as well as food and time spent, and in the worst case, life.

Sooner or later, on the way the player will meet groups of boulders or obelisks, blocking further exploration of the area. Boulders can simply be destroyed with a pickaxe. Obelisks are of two types - light and dark. To pass through a dark obelisk, you need to lower your sanity to 15%, and to pass through a light one, you need to have more than 20% sanity.

The game has begun!

Generated by chapter 1 - 3.

The player spawns in a swamp area surrounded by a clearing. The seasons are not represented in this world. The chapter begins in winter, with very short daytime and long twilight and night. On the ninth day, the Cyclops-Deer arrives, and on the eleventh day, endless summer begins with a normal daily cycle. At this level, there are periodic attacks of the Hounds.

The level is rich in natural resources on the central island, but the other islands are made up of dangerous biomes containing each of the parts of Maxwell's portal. Often, these biomes are separated from the central one by narrow passages with different threats. Usually these are: spider cocoons, tall bird nests, swamp monsters and mechanical chessmen. There is a chance that some parts of the map will be completely cut off from the rest of the island, the only way to get there is to find a wormhole associated with them. Also at this level, many trees, especially in light forests, have already been cut down, and the grass has been cut (the cut grass will no longer grow). Therefore, the impression that a piece of territory on a map can give can be deceptive.

Archipelago

Generated by chapter 1 - 3.

The player spawns on one of the six islands. Each island is connected by Wormholes, which are the only way to get in and out of the island. This does not mean that the island where the player spawns will have five wormholes. They may also be on other islands. The game starts in summer, but keep in mind that winter will come quickly.

Each part of the portal is on its own island, except for the island where the player spawns. Each island represents basically one or two biomes. The islands are located in a semicircle, which, however, will not give you a clear direction in which to move. The starting island, while not having a portal detail, is a biome full of berries and carrots. It can also have swamps where merms, spiders and tentacles fight each other. In the DLC, the game starts either in the fall or in the spring.

Two worlds

Generated by chapter 3 - 4.

The player spawns in a set up base, surrounded by a fire pit, trees, carrot/berry bushes, and a Tent. On this island, daytime lasts 7 out of 8 minutes of the day. After appearing, Maxwell offers the player a truce, giving them everything they need to live in exchange for staying on the island forever. However, in the "Power of the Giants" add-on, summer is on the island, which is fatal if you are not prepared for it.

The island seems to be friendly and oversaturated with resources: there are many pig villages here, and structures guarded by aggressive sentinel pigs can also be caught. There are many berries and carrots growing on the island, and there are no hostile creatures, with the exception of guardian pigs and spider cocoons, which can also appear on the island. Periodic hound attacks are also present here. You might get a Mandragora. Also found stone biome with boulders different kind. This is the best opportunity to stock up on resources before the next world. It is advisable to explore the entire island for skeletons. Also look for wormholes. They lead to another island, which will not be as friendly as the first one: the daily cycle is standard here (3-4 minutes of the day per day). If you find a yellow wormhole named Sick Wormhole, don't rush to jump into it. She will die immediately after the player passes, leaving you on an uncomfortable second island. Try to explore the island. You might be lucky and find a regular wormhole connecting the two islands, giving you the ability to constantly return to the first island to wait out the night or replenish supplies or health. Otherwise, you need to carefully prepare before the final transition. Time on both islands flows proportionally: if you leave the first in the morning, you will find yourself on the second in the morning too. The same goes for other times of the day. This level should not cause you much trouble, as you are most likely already well equipped and taught how to safely roam the swamps, which are plentiful on the second island.

Darkness

Always chapter 5.

The fifth chapter has a number of major differences, which means the end of the journey for all but the most advanced players. Here you have to survive in the endless night.

There is very little food to collect on this level and the only source of natural light is Maxwell's Lights. You spawn surrounded by campfires and campfires, next to you is a backpack containing a blueprint for a mining hat, some grass and wood. A fire staff, gunpowder, and some random blueprint may also come across. This may sound very reassuring, but in fact, these things will not help you much if you are not prepared for this level. There are sleeping Pigs in the level that will wake up if they are attacked by spiders, which can give you a source of meat and monster meat. You can also find Tallbird nests. They can be placed in very large groups, making them difficult to kill, but still a very necessary task: killing them will give you a lot of meat and eggs. It will not be superfluous to track down Koaloslon. Maxwell's Lights are randomly placed on the map - they light up when the player is close. Use their light to pick up a search rod instead of a torch (if you don't have the ingredients for a mining helmet) and explore the area around. Hound Mounds and Maxwell's Traps can be found in the rock biome. Some islands can be connected to other isthmuses that are blocked by boulders or obelisks, just like in The Winter King ( detailed description passage of the obelisks in the description of the level). If you find a chest, do not open it - otherwise winter will begin, and the chest will contain a vest, a hat and logs. Summer is waiting for you in the Power of Giants expansion at this level.

Checkmate

Always chapter 6.

Maxwell does not meet you at this level.

This is the last level - here you have to go through a labyrinth with Maxwell's Lights, rare chests and Maxwell himself, who is chained to the throne.

Next to the throne is a gramophone that can be turned off, for which Maxwell will thank the player, as well as a lock in which you need to insert a search wand to free Maxwell and end the game. However, you will have to take his place.

After passing, Maxwell will be available to you as a character.

Characters and Creatures

Characters:

Don't starve

  • Wilson Percival Higsbury is a scientist. The first and already available character in the game. Wilson himself is featured in the trailer for the game. One of two characters in the game who can grow a beard and shave it off. Wilson is the only character able to grow a beard (with the exception of Webber, but he grows a gossamer beard, which produces webs instead of hair). A beard can be shaved with a razor, it gives a certain amount of hair and raises sanity. The beard also protects from the cold. His voice sounds like a trumpet with a mute.
  • Willow is an arsonist. The first female character and also the first unlockable character in the game. Does not take any damage from any fire sources, and also replenishes the level of sanity while near the fire. When she appears, she has unique item- lighter and teddy bear in multiplayer. Therefore, playing for her, you do not need to be afraid of night monsters. When her sanity is low, she accidentally lights a fire under her feet, which can cause a fire in your base.
  • Wolfgang is a strong man. The ability of this character is that with a high degree of satiety, he becomes stronger and his health increases. Wolfgang goes hungry much faster. And despite his big mustache, Wolfgang can't grow a beard. He is also afraid of the dark (in the dark, his mind goes down), and his voice sounds like a tuba.
  • Wendy - has a rather interesting ability: from the flower that she has from the very beginning, laid out on the ground, when killing someone, the ghost of her deceased sister Abigail will appear, who will fight with any mob that tried to attack Wendy. Judging by the phrase that Wendy utters, examining the statue of Maxwell, it can be assumed that she and her sister Abigail are the daughters of Jack Carter - Maxwell's brother. Wendy's voice, like Willow's, is similar to a flute.
  • WX-78 is a robot. It is a robotic copy of Wilson. WX-78 can eat stale and spoiled foods without harm to health or a penalty to hunger. He can also eat parts and mechanisms. Initially, he has a modest performance, but if he eats a lot of gears (no one except him can eat gears), then he will give out quite impressive performance! WX-78 does not respond well to rain. If lightning strikes him, he replenishes health, loses his sanity, glows and moves faster. His voice is like a synthesizer.
  • Wickerbottom is an old librarian. She has read a lot of smart books in her life, so during the game she gets a bonus to research: for example, if other characters need a Science Machine to create a Shovel recipe, then Wickerbottom can make it without a machine. She is the only one who can create books. Receives more penalty from spoiled food and cannot sleep. Her voice sounds like an oboe.
  • Woody is the sixth character unlocked through experience. Woody's ability lies in the fact that he has a favorite ax named Lucy, which cuts down trees several times faster. But if you cut down a lot of trees, Woody will turn into a giant beaver with one scale - "tree hunger". After the parameter of this scale reaches zero, the beaver falls asleep, and the next morning Woody becomes normal again. In multiplayer, the mechanics are slightly different. His voice is like a violin.

In addition to characters that are unlocked through simple experience gains, there are also characters that can only be unlocked in adventure mode.

  • Wes - mime. Silent character. Expresses all his thoughts with gestures. His ability (as strange as it sounds) is a weakness, as he was created by the developers as a challenge to experienced players. All of Wes's stats (Fed, Health, Sanity) are lower than those of other heroes. He is so fragile that he can die even with almost full Health, Satiety and Sanity. His unique item is balls, which he loses a bit of sanity when created, but which deal damage when popped, and mobs can attack them.
  • Maxwell - As a playable character, he can be unlocked by full passage adventure mode. Before that, we saw him at the very beginning of the game. Maxwell is the one who locked us in this strange world. Before the events of the game, he was the illusionist William Carter, who used the name Maxwell as his stage name. It is also interesting that his name does not begin with the letter "W" like everyone else, but with "M". Ability - restore sanity, being close to enemies. Initially, he has a dark sword, dark armor, an amethyst, and the Codex Umbra book, with which Maxwell can create his shadow counterparts. His voice sounds like a harmonium.

Reigns of Giants DLC

  • Wigfried is an actress who is clearly obsessed with the last role of the Valkyrie. Deals more damage and takes less, eats only meat, gains sanity and health from defeated enemies. She also initially has a combat helmet and a spear, which only she can make, and some meat. Can be opened by gaining experience. Her voice is like a gramophone record of a brass band.
  • Webber is in all likelihood a boy living inside the spider that ate him. Webber can feed spiders to follow him, but is at odds with most neutral creatures. He grows a silk beard and initially has a spider cocoon and two pieces of monster meat. Webber also eats monster meat with no health or sanity penalties. His voice sounds like a detuned bass guitar.

There are 4 more characters in the "Shipwrecked" DLC:

  • Valani is a surfer who has a surfboard from the start of the game. It also dries faster and restores sanity while sailing the waves. Unlocked with experience.
  • Varley is a chef who loves cooked food and dislikes raw food. has a portable cauldron and a chef's bag from the start of the game. Unlocked with experience.
  • Wilbur is the monkey king that the primates obey. Likes bananas and "produces" manure. It opens if you knock out his crown from the primate and give it to him, having found it in the ocean, on a raft, and unconscious.
  • Woodlegs is an old pirate with wooden legs. He likes to swim in the sea and does not like to walk on land. Can create unique marine items. Unlocked after he is released from his cage in the volcano.

Hamlet DLC

  • Wilba, the daughter of the Queen Pig, is a princess. The player must kill the ant queen and return the crown to the pig queen. After that, Wilba will disappear from game world and will become game character. Pigs do not attack her for stealing, such as picking grass or flowers from farms, and they will periodically approach the princess and give her small gifts: logs, grunts, and more. Transforms into a werewolf during a full moon and a swine apocalypse and if it eats 2 monster meat or 2 bean bugs.
  • Wormwood - An animated flower, available at the beginning of the game. It is immune to allergies during the flowering season. Has a special tab "Gift of Gardening". Restoring sanity by digging up dunghills. Restoring sanity by planting seeds and seedlings. Toothpicks, creepers and bait flowers are neutral to it. It has 3 flowering stages. Becomes faster and loses satiety faster during flowering.
  • Wheeler is a fearless explorer. To open a character, the player needs to gain 3200 experience (or live 160 in-game days). Initially, it has its own weapon that shoots objects, and a navigator that allows you to find those things that were previously placed in it. It has a unique ability "Evasion", which allows you to quickly make tackles over short distances. The ability has a 1.5 second cooldown, during which it cannot be used again. Movement speed is always 5% faster than other characters. Receives a 1% speed increase for each unused inventory slot.

creatures

Harmless

  • Horned rabbits are popularly rabbits. Perhaps the first creatures you meet, when killed, a piece of meat drops out. If you catch it with a special trap, you can get a live rabbit. Live rabbits are used to create a hatter and winter earmuffs.
  • A moleworm is a harmless mole that lives underground. Steals items lying on the ground. When killed, a piece of meat and what he stole falls, and when hit with a hammer, you will get a living mole, from which you can make a hat in which you see in the dark and do not die from a night monster. Lives in minks.
  • Giant tentacle - lives in dungeons. Doesn't deal damage by itself, but summons small tentacles that try to kill you.
  • Eyeless deer - comes in winter, live in packs. They run away when the character approaches. If you lead these deer to a stone or a tree, then the horns will fall out of them.
  • Butterflies - Normal butterflies, with a small chance to drop oil (butter-fly joke)

Development

The idea for the game came about over the Christmas weekend when one of the developers put together a prototype game that main character was on an island, and night fell periodically on it. The hero had a fire and an ax at his disposal, and with the help of the latter it was possible to hunt pigs living on the island and get meat. At the same time, at night the main character could only be at the fire and at that time he had to fight off the pigs. Game process was built in such a way that there was not enough meat, and gradually the level of satiety decreased for the hero and this led to death. The task was to survive as long as possible, and at this stage the expression “don’t starve” appeared (with English- "do not starve") .

The first assembled prototype was shelved, and was in that state for over a year. The studio decided to resume work, but at the same time to conduct them in the vein of independent development from the publisher. For this, a free-to-play model was chosen and a strategy as in Minecraft when it was created little game with a minimum of content, and then the developers looked, if it turns out to be interesting to users, then development continues, and if not, then it remains free. To implement the model, steps were taken to popularize the game. This strategy worked, and the studio began to develop the game - on various platforms and fill it with content so that "there was something to buy in it." Thus, the project developed, and the price for the sold game increased. During sales, the developers continued their outreach strategy, part of which was the mandatory sale of one additional free copy with every purchase of the game. That is, each buyer received a game for himself and the opportunity to give it to another player.

Game design philosophy Don't Starve was to create an enjoyable gaming experience while giving the player minimal instructions to survive. It was assumed that all further actions - the study of the world and survival - he must do himself. At the same time, since the main goal is the game itself, and not achievements, the death of a character should not repel players. Content creation was focused on 20-30 days of in-game survival in the game (a few hours of real time), and the developers after release were surprised that many players crossed this milestone and lived in Don't Starve hundreds of days. After analysis, the developers added the Maxwell's Door to the game, finding which the player could go through five extremely difficult levels, and their passage would give victory.

Continuations

Don't Starve Together

Don't Starve Together - multiplayer version of Don't Starve released as standalone game April 21, 2016.

Don't Starve Together is an original game with content from the DLC "Reign Of Giants" and a number of innovations specifically for multiplayer.

Unlike Don't Starve, upon death players turn into ghosts. In the ghost state, the character does not have an inventory and the ability to pick up and carry items, he cannot deal damage and directly interact with the world, but instead the ghost can "disturb" a creature or object in the game world. Having disturbed any object, there is a chance to endow it with some property, for example, a tree can catch fire or become an ent, and a pig can turn into a werewolf.

There are 3 game modes: Survival, Endless and Wilderness. In survival mode, players can resurrect each other, however, when all players become ghosts, a timer will start counting down the time until the world is recreated, and each ghost negatively affects the mind of other players. In endless mode, players can resurrect at the entrance to the world. The world, when all players die, will not be recreated. Unlike other modes, in wilderness all players appear at random points on the map, and upon death, the player does not become a ghost, but starts the game again. Each of the modes can be played both cooperatively and with the possibility of PvP between players.

Don't Starve Shipwrecked

On July 31, 2015, Klei Entertainment announced the release of the add-on Shipwrecked for his sandbox Don't Starve. To create it, the developers joined forces with another studio - Capy (or Capybara Games), primarily known for Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP (English) and Super Time Force (English). Although the exact role of the studio's staff is unknown, Klei representatives said that Capy is primarily responsible for the design of new content. In addition to Shipwrecked, Capybara continues to create the Below project for Xbox One and PC.

The addendum will take place ocean- For the first time, players will be able to leave land and travel on water. Users should also expect "new characters and creatures, unique biomes and weather effects." The developers from Klei did not share other details, but what is happening in Shipwrecked is probably somehow connected with the crash of the ship, based on its name.

Don't Starve: Shipwrecked was released on December 2nd for PC (Windows, Linux, Mac). The project is only available for solo passage. Any information about possible cooperative passage there is no add-on.

Don't Starve Hamlet

On September 13, 2017, Klei Entertainment announced the release of the add-on Hamlet for his sandbox Don't Starve.

The scene of the add-on will be a high-altitude plateau inhabited by intelligent pigs, more civilized than in previous parts. Users should also expect "new characters and creatures, unique biomes and weather effects." In addition to the pig village, there are abandoned ruins, new bosses, seasons, mobs, weapons, crafting, mechanics and much more. This DLC carries over some elements from Shipwrecked- for example, the opportunity to sail on the lakes by boat.

In DST, there are several options for your status in the game:

In this case, you are an administrator and can fully use the console.

You are a guest.

You do not have rights and cannot use the console. There are a limited number of commands that work on the client side. But almost all key information is processed
on the server, so cheating will not work.

You are the admin of another server. That is, it is either your dedicated server (using your token), or someone else's server / host on which you were given administrator rights.

In this case, you can also use the console fully. But the console works in two modes - "Local" and "Remote". In the first case, the command will be executed locally, as if you were a guest. In the second case, the command will be sent to the server and executed there. The mode is switched with the Ctrl key. "Remote" mode is indicated to the left of the console with a purple inscription. When executing "remote" commands, information is displayed in the server log, and not in the client console log, including syntax errors or unsuccessful execution.

Once again, this game came out a few months before the boom in procedurally generated survival projects. In connection with what Don "t Starve was good not only for its excellent visual style and authentic sound, but also for its truly original gameplay.

Don "t Starve Together - fun on the net

In 2014, the developers realized that their concept went beyond the single-player experience, and introduced a free multiplayer add-on. You could pay for early access to the beta, but Don "t Starve Together was promised free of charge to all owners of the original.

Don "t Starve Together in essence a new game. Yes, she borrows a lot from Don "t Starve, but at the same time contains innovations that could only be implemented in the multiplayer part. Now you will see this.

There are three modes to choose from. Survival is the main mode. There are multiple players on the server. When one of them dies, they become a ghost that drains the mind of living characters for a limited time. If all players die and no one has time to respawn before the timer expires, the world is reset (that is, you have to start all over again).

"Endless" (Endless) is not such a hardcore mode. In it, the world does not reset, and dead players can use the portal to respawn. The third mode "Desert" (Wilderness) is what you are used to seeing in other multiplayer projects. There are no ghosts here, after death the player is reborn at a randomly selected point on the map. There are no resurrection items.

Generally Don "t Starve Together does an excellent job. The multiplayer component gives new emotions and warms up attention to Don "t Starve, which, for a moment, will turn three years old tomorrow. I believe that this is a must-have purchase for everyone who is interested in the game. And if you have had it for a long time, you are not required to pay for the multiplayer DLC.

What you wanted to know but were afraid to ask Don "t Starve Together can be played both online and with a friend who is sitting in the room next to you.
