The Forest is a survival horror game released on Steam Early Access on May 30, 2014. As a result of the plane crash, the player ends up on the island. Now he must build shelters, make weapons and various survival tools. The developers introduced a cannibal tribe into the game, which, as planned, should make the player think: is the tribe the enemy of the protagonist, and vice versa, is the protagonist the enemy of the tribe. There are no missions in the game, but there is an optional ending.

During the day, the protagonist feels relatively safe, can build shelters and collect supplies. At night, the inhabitants of the island become more active. The island is a forest with variable weather, an extensive network of caves and underground lakes, growing and dying plants. The player is completely free to build a camp, build a fire to keep warm, get food, search for and plant seeds, choose between a small shelter or a large coastal fortress, decorate the house with objects, set traps and perimeter defenses. With enemies, the following strategies are possible: avoidance (stealth) or fight with sticks and stones. The island clan is similar to people, has its own beliefs, families and moral values, but these are not ordinary people, but genetic mutants.

Development

In 2013, the game became part of the Steam Greenlight. The developers were inspired by cult films like The Descent (2005) and Cannibal Hell (1980), from games they were influenced by Minecraft(2011) and Don" tstarve(2013). The developers noted that the game was influenced by Disney, and that they did not want to make the game absolutely "dark and depressing". The Forest is headphone compatible virtual reality Oculus Rift. The possibility of including a joint multiplayer, which, according to the developers, will give the game randomness, is being considered; while they would like to avoid mass multiplayer in the spirit of DayZ(2013) or Rust(2013). The game is based on the Unity 4 engine. Part of The Forest team has experience in creating cinematic visual effects for films such as Tron: Legacy (2010) and The Amazing Spider-Man: High Voltage (2014).

Jokes are jokes, but the plot for such a game is simply not needed. After all, it is clear to everyone that GG will not find a child. But that's not the point. Before us is a game in which you need! Survive in extremely difficult conditions. It's Survival Horror! Here, instead of zombies, there are cannibal mutants, which means it is already unique (I'm joking).

The main character is on his feet. There is no doubt about the abundance of food and water, because we have whole bags under our feet stuffed with everything that is possible. Some contain alcohol and pills, others contain food bars and the like. After a couple of minutes of looting, a hatchet appears in the hero’s hands, and behind him is a whole warehouse of medicines, vodka, food and other junk.

Of course, all junk and unnecessary can eventually be converted into something useful. For example, use already unnecessary coins to create explosives, and make armor from the skin of a monitor lizard. Why not?

The developers of the game have worked very hard. We implemented and combined two things that players love - a beautiful picture and advanced crafting. Impressive open world, teeming with different living creatures: sharks and fish dominate the sea, turtles and gulls settled on the beaches, and deer, raccoons and hares roam in the forest. And that is not all. All animals can be eaten or sold in crafting.

This genre, called sandbox (or "sandbox" in Russian) has become incredibly popular, and up to this day more and more new games are being released that give you the opportunity to be in wide world, where there are no restrictions and no goals are set for you, they do not give you quests and tasks. You are free to do whatever you please. One of latest games of this kind was the project The Forest, the review of which you will now read. Unlike the same "Minecraft", this game is made in a bright realistic three-dimensional style. Naturally, you have to craft a lot, and even more - to fight for your own survival. This is the whole point of The Forest project. A review of the game may well interest you and arouse in you the desire to try it out. this game, even if you haven't been into sandbox projects before.

Introduction

If we talk about The Forest project, the review should start with the fact that the game was released quite recently - it started in March 2014, but then it was in early access status, that is, people could buy the game and get the opportunity to test it and report about bugs, share your wishes and express complaints while the developers are still in the final stage of development. But even then the project received incredibly high ratings and positive reviews - since the launch of the test version, the game has gathered millions of fans around the world. And if you now ask which of the horror films is the most original, unusual and impressive, then most people will answer - The Forest. The review will describe in more detail the advantages and features of this game.

The plot of the game

Review games Forest should start with a plot, although it's hard to call it that. As you understand, sandbox games rarely have a pronounced storyline, so most likely it can be called a background, a description of what happened before the start of the gameplay. You are a passenger of an airplane that crashes and crashes in an unknown forest, which is many kilometers away from civilization. Only a few people survive, among which, of course, you are also present. It quickly becomes clear that there is no point in waiting for rescue from the outside, so you start collecting everything that will help you survive. After a while, a terrifying discovery also occurs - you are not alone in the forest. It is inhabited by mutant cannibals who have so far set to eating dead passengers, but soon the supply will be exhausted, and the hunt for survivors will begin. It is at this moment that the most interesting begins - and also the most terrible. However, this is not all that The Forest review can tell you.

Game process

Many gamers begin to ask questions about the gameplay of this project, some even manage to confuse this game with another one called Ori and the blind forest. The review concerns exclusively The Forest project, where game process is a survival horror. You play as a survivor of a plane crash and gain control over him immediately after he wakes up at the crash site. You immediately need to start taking care of your future - collect a variety of supplies, look for various useful objects such as food and water, medicines and much more. You need to build a shelter where you can feel safe, look for ways to protect yourself from cannibals (for example, dirt is great at blocking your scent, by which they look for you). But at the same time, do not think that you will always be able to hide, so do not forget about weapons that you can use against attackers in case of danger. And never confuse this terrifying nightmare with the calm and measured gameplay of the Ori and the blind forest project. The review, of course, does not end there - even more interesting details await you ahead.

Opponents

In the forest you will meet various opponents who will threaten your life. Naturally, the main threat comes from mutant cannibals, who are just waiting for any unusual smell or sound to immediately rush in and pounce on you. They usually move in groups - they attack in the same way. In terms of survivability, they are equal to you, in fact, as in strength, but they cannot strengthen themselves with weapons, but you can. Therefore, use any advantage, and also remember that the most important thing is to eliminate the leader of the group, then all the other cannibals will retreat and leave you alone. However, besides them, there are more terrible monsters - mutated octopuses and spiders. You can kill the octopuses with various explosives, but you can’t deal with the spider, so here you need to concentrate on running away and hiding from it. It is not difficult to do this, but if you hesitate, you will instantly be eaten. Also, the island is full of various animals that pose a little threat to you, but if you are well armed, then everything turns upside down, and you can hunt these animals to get meat for frying, although this possibility was not yet in one of the first The versions Forest 0.22. The review is about the final version, so the meat is already here - like all other food products.

Food

The forest is rich in a wide variety of food products, the most useful and nutritious of which is meat. However, it needs to be fried, which attracts the attention of the monsters. Therefore, you can focus on berries and mushrooms, which can also be found in abundance - they restore health and satisfy hunger quite well, but among them there may be a poisonous berry or an inedible mushroom that will take a lot of health from you. Also, don't forget to visit the plane, as there you can find a large number of different edible supplies, such as soda or This was also added only after one of the first versions of The Forest 0.21. This review is coming to an end - it remains only to say a few words about weapons.

Armament

There are not so many weapons in the game: explosives that you can make yourself, a pistol with flares, and several types of axes. Naturally, you can also use various items at hand, such as rocks or enemy body parts, to fend off attacks if you do not have a serious weapon with you.

"Realistic Minecraft" - this tagline has been on the radars of gaming journalists for more than a year, almost since the release of the original Minecraft. It would seem that it is enough to replace retro graphics with a modern picture, and part of the gigantic audience of this game will be interested in your project. In reality, everything is somewhat more difficult.
Minecraft fans accept it for what it is, the graphics alone fail to distract them, and now, one after another, numerous Minecraft clones die, despite their realistic lighting, furious gunfights or a solid number of polygons in the frame.

The plot of the game - in the style of the TV series Lost. You come to your senses after the crash, start exploring the island. It looks uninhabited: no roads, just one impenetrable thicket, mountains and ocean. There is nothing. First of all, you need to go to the dying wreck of the airliner and take everything you need from there - food and tools. Over time, the provisions will run out and you will have to get food yourself. This is where realistic Minecraft begins.

The game has a change of time of day. During the day you collect supplies and rebuild the shelter, at night you warm yourself by the fire and hide from enemies. If the cover is strong enough, you might even be able to get some sleep just by waiting out the night. If the fortress is not yet completed or the enemies have damaged the walls, you will have to fight or hide in the gloom of the night.

Collecting items, building a base and fighting opponents are the basis of the balance in the game, all this is given no less attention than the economy and battles, for example, in StarCraft 2. The subtlety is that the author is going to keep the atmosphere of horror, and this makes him go experiment with the interface.

What will you sow:
Despite its impressive feature set, The Forest has little to no traditional UI elements. So, let's say there is no inventory, you yourself see all the items carried. Most actions are contextual. If you combine a long stick and a sharp stone, you will sharpen the tip, creating a primitive spear. If you compare a short stick, a stone and a rope, you get a kind of flint axe. With them you will break through the skulls of your enemies, and most importantly - cut down trees.

Primitive gameplay element similar games worked out with due care - you will have to collect firewood often, so the developers are trying their best. Firstly, the felling itself is framed almost photorealistically: under the blows of the ax, chips fly from the trunk, the incision gradually deepens, until the tree cracks with delicious crunch, and the chopped trunk falls on damp foliage, leaving only a stump. Secondly, trees are restored gradually, and the forest is not randomly generated, but quite specific, once and for all given. By the familiar stumps at the edge, you can always determine where you have been before.

It would seem - nice bonus. In fact, there is another gameplay layer hiding here. The game features a complex ecosystem that reacts dynamically to your actions. So, if you cut down all the trees in some area, take out all the berries and edible plants from there, you will simply deplete it. Animals will disappear there (and they can also be eaten), and the fact of the disappearance of plants is already unpleasant in itself: having cleared the clearing near the base, you will have to go in search of supplies in a dense thicket, and who knows what awaits you there ...

This problem is solved simply - you just need to know the measure. Arriving at a familiar edge, it is not necessary to clean it to the ground. Collect some of the fruits, leave the trees, and after a while the site will fully recover. Moreover, in The Forest you can plant crops and harvest crops yourself. Competent intervention in the environment is one of the main elements of the gameplay.

But extensive agriculture, unfortunately for the hero, is by no means the only kind of island "entertainment". The authors themselves insist that their game is primarily survival horror. Yes, you have to fight with the natives of the island, fight with them with an ax, set traps on them ... but, as alpha tests show, the authors are best at stealth.

Let's say you need rare berries from the top of a hill by all means. Carried away by the search, you did not notice how dark it was. Creepy cannibals go hunting, and it will no longer be possible to run to the base. The jungle-covered island is dotted with a network of underground caves in which savage islanders have long lived. Once in the thicket at night, you will have to hide in the shadows so as not to accidentally give yourself away and attract the raging tribe.
Here again there is a catch. At first, the reprisals against the natives do not cause you unnecessary emotions, but as the curiosity draws the hero deep into the underground catacombs (“And there is nothing there ...” - the developers mysteriously hint), it turns out that the natives are not so crazy. They have their own tribe, they have families... As conceived by the authors, at some point you should feel like an invader who invaded someone else's territory.

The Forest(The Forest) is a computer, multiplayer game in which many genres are intertwined: survival, horror, adventure and action. The game also includes a rather interesting plot that you have to go through, constantly encountering difficulties. You will play the role of a father who crashed a plane with his son. After you wake up, you will notice that your son is no longer around, and in your memories there is a fragment of how an unknown person takes him away in his arms. Now you have one single goal - to survive and find your son. You decide to carefully explore the island for useful resources that will help you save your life in the future. You can also build a shelter here, but do not forget that you need to properly protect it, because you will not be alone on the island. As you forage for food and wander around in search of useful items, you will be able to stumble upon many different camps where the natives live. With each new day lived, these opponents will become even stronger, so you should replenish your arsenal with powerful weapons. Can you find your son? Can you survive in harsh enough conditions?
