You have probably seen giant chess that you can play in the park or in the country. So you can combine mental and physical activity. But it is very difficult to make such chess with your own hands, but you can make a huge domino without any problems. This is exactly what we propose to do.

Materials and tools for making dominoes:

  • fairly wide boards (depending on how big the dominoes you want to make)
  • dark stain
  • White paint
  • paint brush
  • a circular saw
  • grinder

How to make dominoes

Prepare the required number of boards. The length of each domino must be twice the width of the board. There should be 28 such bones.

Saw the boards into equal rectangles. Sand all edges with a grinder.

Treat the boards with stain. If they are not dark enough, the stain can be reapplied. Let the stain dry.

After drawing a strip of white paint, divide each bone into two halves.

Mark the bones:

  • two zeros and then 0/1 to 0/6
  • two units and then 1/2 to 1/6
  • two deuces, and then from 2/3 to 2/6
  • two threes and then 3/4 to 3/6
  • two fours and then 4/5 and 4/6
  • two fives and 5/6
  • two sixes.

Let the paint dry. Giant domino bones are ready. You can go outside and play with friends.

Another name for the game is “say it differently”. The essence is simple: play from 4 to 16 people. The participants are divided into teams. There can be 2,3,4 people in a team. One of them pulls out a card on which 8-10 words are written, each word must be explained in other words, sounds can be used (for example: wow-wow, meow ...) you can’t show and use single-root words. 1 minute is given for 1 card, you need to quickly guess as many words as possible. Cut out cards from cardboard and beautifully write commonly used words, for example: soup, ice, monkey, enemy, sweet, photograph ... There should be at least 30 cards with 10 words each. Words must not be repeated.

It turns for exactly 5 seconds and tries to memorize the images. It is turned away and the cards are turned over to the other side. Now he must turn over the cards and find pairs within a minute. The winner is the person who guessed the largest number of pairs with the same drawings. Cards can be made from cardboard and draw any drawings.

Today I want to share with you my own experience in creating dominoes with your own hands.

As is known for playing dominoes it is necessary to have 28 knuckles with a different set of dots marked on them. Our task is to make these knuckles. Shop bones will be made of plastic. We will make them out of wood.

In this case, we came across a piece of oak board. From it we will make our dominoes.

We clamp the piece of board in a vise, preferably by placing pieces of wood so as not to spoil the workpiece with a vise. Next, we cut even 4 pieces with a nail file with a thrifty calculation so that in the end we get 7-8 bones from one piece (just in case, you need to cut more. You need to choose a file so that it saws easier and faster than others, but at the same time so that the size of the cut is minimal .

First, with a thinner file (in this case, a file for metal), we outline the place of the future cut, and then we saw it off with a larger file.

I will say right away, since it was an oak, sawing was very physically difficult, but at the same time it also played a positive role. All pieces were even and without traces of sawing.

You need to try to cut pieces of the same thickness so that they look prettier later. The cut pieces need to be cleaned using sandpaper or a grinding wheel.

After you do this, everything remains probably the most important point in production dominoes- drawing points.

You can apply the points in any way that comes to your mind: either just draw with a marker or cut holes with a drill. We had a Soviet burner at hand, with which we marked the knuckles.

  • it is better to make knuckles with a height of no more than 3 cm, since a larger size is inconvenient to hold in your hands
  • try to cut all the knuckles of the same thickness and the same height, as different sizes will be uncomfortable to hold in your hand and look;
  • it is better to cut (if possible) with a carpentry machine, since when cutting with a hand saw, bumps and chips cannot be avoided;
  • mark the dots with a pencil using a ruler with even holes.

This game can be played by 2 to 4 people. Each player is dealt 7 bones, which before that are thoroughly mixed on the table with dots down. The game starts with a bone 1|1. That is, the one who got it goes. If no one gets 1|1, then the one with the smallest double (2|2, 3|3, 4|4, 5|5, 6|6) goes. Double 0|0 is not taken into account. The one who got rid of all the bones on his hands the fastest, or the one who made the "fish" (when there are still bones on his hands, but there is nothing to report) won. For kids, not dots are drawn on domino chips, but pictures that are interesting to kids: transport, fruits - vegetables, animals, toys, geometric figures etc. Choose the domino that your child is interested in.

You can give such a domino to a baby when he learns to sit. What can you play with such a crumb:

  • make a path of two chips, walk along it with your fingers, and then with the baby's fingers;
  • from 3 - 6 chips, build a tower (the kid will like to destroy it, like a tower of cubes;
  • build a shed out of 6 chips (4 chips on the walls and 2 chips on the ceiling), hide a small toy or picture in it, show the kid how to find it (the fastest way is, again, to destroy the shed);
  • put a few domino chips one after another (you can put some small toy behind them) and show the kid the “domino principle”: “there was a fence, thick, high, and now there is no fence, the fence fell, and who was hiding behind it?”
  • take two wooden chips in your hands and knock against each other - you get a very pleasant sound;
  • lay out 2 - 3 domino chips on the table or on the floor, show the baby how to knock on them with a spoon (you can take different spoons: wooden, metal, plastic); you can beat the rhythm: knock on the left and right chip once, and on the central one twice;
  • make cuts of various shapes in a cardboard box: according to the size of the long side, according to the size of the short side, on the other hand, make a cut so that the domino chip enters entirely (if you keep the box hanging, the chips will fall out of this hole); show your child how to push the dominoes into the slots, and offer to help the ants climb into the anthill.

In these games, to prevent the child from being distracted by the pictures, you can turn the tiles face down.

Already at the age of one year with a baby, you can lay out tracks from domino chips. It is not necessary to follow the sequence of chips at this age. But sometimes you can, commenting on your actions, lay out the correct path (just in case, I remind you: dominoes must touch halves with the same pictures). Of course, the kid will not immediately begin to build the right paths - he is simply not interested, but the principle will gradually learn. From several domino chips, the baby will be able to lay down the correct path closer to 3 years.

You can walk along the path with toys or ride cars, compare the paths in length, make the paths equal, or, conversely, one path is shorter than the other.

Paths can connect toy houses or lead to a store. If you play with fairy tales, you can use dominoes to lay out a path along which a gingerbread man rolls or Little Red Riding Hood walks, or paths between the houses of the three pigs. Ask the kid how you can save the pigs from the wolf if the forest in which the three pigs live is so dense that even the wolf can only run along the paths in it (break the path to the next house after the pig runs to it). If you have several identical sets of dominoes, you can nest an intricate network of roads or a maze.

Flat and bulky buildings

From any domino (wooden, cardboard or plastic) you can make flat buildings: if you don’t like the pictures, turn the dominoes upside down - you will have 28 exactly the same blocks. You can build a hut or a multi-storey building, a fence, a boat, even a crane. Do not tell the kid what you are building, let him try to guess himself. Then the kid can build something, and you need to guess.

From a wooden domino with chips - blocks, excellent volumetric buildings are obtained. Start with a fence: it can be low or high (dominoes are placed on the long or short side respectively) or long or short. Then you can build a house with ceilings or by placing dominoes on top of each other. To create voluminous buildings from narrow blocks, it will require sleight of hand, attentiveness and accuracy from the baby, he himself will be able to make them after 2.5 years.

Domino patterns

From domino chips, you can lay out arbitrary patterns. Take a sheet of drawing paper or colored paper in A3 size, invite your child to lay out a pattern of dominoes on it - you will get an oriental carpet.

We play by the rules

In traditional dominoes, if two people play, then they take 7 chips each, three or four - 5 each, five - 4 each. Players do not show each other their cards.

The game starts with a double or any card. If several players have doubles or no one has doubles, the one who goes first can be determined using lots or a counting rhyme.

The first player places his chip face up. The second one applies his chip to the first chip so that the patterns on the adjacent halves of the chips are the same (but they can be turned upside down). Chips can be applied to either end of the chain. If a player does not have a suitable card, or the cards run out, he takes chips from the pool until he can make a move or the chips in the pool run out.

The game ends when one of the participants puts the last chip and the buy is empty, or ahead of time, when none of the players can make a move (this situation is called "fish"). The winner is the one who lays out the last chip.
