Overview of a portable game console based on Android JXD S601. Chinese handheld game console Gameplayer psp MP5 handheld game console from China

  • As a gamer with more than 25 years of experience, I could not pass by when I saw this console. The main goal is to play with convenience the good old 8 bit games such as battletoads, super mario, tanks and other immortal classics. Yes, you can not spend money, just install the emulator on your android smartphone, download ROMs with games and play. But, on the touch screen, playing 8-bit games that require dexterity and speed is not convenient. And some just aren't possible. In addition, it was interesting to introduce my 6-year-old son to the games of his childhood, because modern games, although beautiful in graphics, are for the most part absolutely boring and not interesting ... There was also an idea to buy an ordinary prefix, such as a dandy to connect to TV, they are still on sale. But a low resolution on a 40-inch TV will look just awful, and you can’t drag it with you, unlike a console. At their core, these consoles differ from each other only in the built-in free memory and firmware, and so - in principle, the same thing. Therefore, after reading a review of the Chinese game console Gameplayer psp MP5, you will have an idea about the possibility of other Chinese portable consoles not on Android.
A lot of things cannot be expressed in words, so along with the text version, I have prepared a video review in which, among other things, you can see the gameplay and playability of some popular games.

As they say, they are greeted by clothes, which turned out to be modest. The box is unmarked, without information about the model, manufacturer, etc. Just a game console print.

Only on the side are color options and the amount of built-in memory. Nothing more) Based on this, it turns out that the manufacturer is a Chinese basement, as a result of which there may be surprises ... Although I have already withstood 2 weeks of intensive use.

The package is quite extensive. There is a thin manual describing the main features and supposedly a 1-year warranty card. Also, the console is equipped with a charger with a declared charge current of 1A, but in truth, the charger is very cheap and hardly gives out even half of the declared current, which can be seen from long-term charging. It doesn't heat up though. A usb cable for connecting to a computer is also available in the box, in addition to data transfer, it may also be needed for charging - the console can be charged from usb. But that's not all. The caring Chinese have included simple headphones, a disk with useful software and games, and even a cable for connecting the set-top box to the TV. But here with a cable there was an embarrassment. Firstly, its length is only 80 centimeters. Just think about it))) You need to stand almost right next to the TV ... Obviously a crazy idea, you need to use some kind of extension cord, I think it will not be difficult to buy wires and adapters in the nearest radio parts and electronics store. But that's not all - I still couldn't connect the console to the TV, maybe it only connects to old models, pots with a kinescope. The modern 40 inch samsung refused to display the image on the screen. Well, okay)

The appearance of the game console is almost completely copied from Sony's psp with minor changes.

On the right side, a block of start, select buttons and volume control has been added. Game buttons in the usual place.

On the left side, the stick and arrow buttons are all like the original. The buttons are pressed softly, it is convenient to play.

The back is also similar to the original, but there is no inscription. But they stuck a sticker from which it is clear that the console has 8 gigabytes of memory and there is a radio.

On the right side is the camera lens. The 10 megapixel caption is very exaggerated. Maximum 1 megapixel. The quality of the photo is just terrible, I don’t even recommend trying to shoot something with the built-in camera - a maximum toy for children.

The speaker is located on the left side. The sound is very loud, but squeaky. It is comfortable to use at 50 - 60% volume.

There are connectors: for connecting to tv, usb - for connecting to pc and a headphone jack.

The power lever is placed on the right side.

    Shifts in the usual places

There is a micro sd card expansion slot. I went to 8 gig without any problems.

Here I took the original PSP from Sony from a friend to take a picture next to it. As you can see, the dimensions, design, button and stick layout are very similar.

But naturally inside they are completely different and are similar only in ergonomics. The Chinese psp was created exclusively for nes and gba games. That is, the good old prefix toys. Therefore, we proceed immediately to the most interesting. But first it is worth saying a few words about the screen. Its diagonal is only 4.3 inches and the resolution is 480*270. The resolution is low, some graininess is noticeable. But even the old games do not have high resolution, so the games look organic. Games are displayed in full screen.
When you turn it on, you will be shown a short splash screen, the console will boot up and you will be on the desktop. Most of the labels are installed games. At the bottom, you can select different console functions. The interface is clear and not complicated. There is a Russian language that can be set in the settings, but the clumsy translation inclined my choice in favor of English.

The console already has 2,000 games built in. But the Chinese wouldn't be Chinese if they didn't fool us in the usual way. It's like there used to be 999 cartridges in 1. So here - there are only a couple of hundred games, and then they are repeated in a circle. Moreover, there are only a couple of dozen interesting ones and a whole bunch of some kind of Chinese slag.

But this is absolutely not a problem, because you can find absolutely any game on the network, download and play it on the console. You need to download games in nes or gba format. There are entire sites devoted to such games. I found all the games I was interested in without any problems.

At the beginning of the review, I posted a video version in which I launched some games, such as tanks, black cloak, Felix the cat. Everything works very well and smartly. Playing them, I plunged into my childhood, when I could play Super Mario for hours or shoot at ducks with a light gun. In addition to games, the console can do something else. For example, there is a player with which you can listen to music. It even has equalizer settings, but I did not like the sound - there is little bass.

More useful might be a video player that reads the avi format. Throwing in the memory of the series, you can pass the time on a long train ride. But on the street, it is absolutely impossible to make out something on the screen - there is not enough brightness, and the screen here has a simple TFT with small viewing angles. Autonomy is also not high, at maximum brightness with the volume output through the main speaker, the console works for a couple of hours. Although if buying it for a child is a plus, you can control the time of the game)) It is charged both through the adapter and via usb in a couple of hours.

Well, in general, this is all that can be interesting to tell about the console. Its main feature is a comfortable game of 8-bit toys and I am 100 percent satisfied with this function. The rest - audio / video player, radio, camera and other functions are, in my opinion, an optional addition that any modern smartphone can handle better. With everything except the convenience of the game)) In a couple of weeks I played enough of it with my head, went through a couple of my favorite games, showed the games of my childhood to my son and successfully threw it on the table, where it will lie until the next attack of nostalgia. Thanks to all!

    Dimensions and housing

The prefix came in a white box, with a picture of a white version of the console and a picture of Angry Birds (you can choose a white or black version of the console during the order), slightly shabby by the Russian Post (but oddly enough, even the CD survived inside). Unlike all the description of the device on the box here in Chinese.

Open the box and take out the contents:

    The device itself
    - USB data cable
    - Chinese exercise
    - White JXD headphones
    - Instructions in Chinese
    - a CD with the data of the set-top box recorded on it (as I understood from the contents there is something like a backup copy of all data and games from the set-top box)

I took the device in black (a white version is also available). The case is made very high quality (I'm not afraid to say that it is not worse, but rather even better than the case of the original PSP). Nothing creaks or cracks when pressed, the button travel is just as pleasant as on the PSP. The prefix is very comfortable to hold in hands and it is very light (in my opinion it is 2 times lighter than PSP Fat).

From the front of the device, we see an almost complete copy of the PSP - arrow buttons, an analog joystick, game control buttons, Select and Start buttons for emulators, and Android buttons - Menu and Back. The screen is resistive without multi-touch support, but it is not needed here - the full potential of the device is revealed precisely in games that do not require work with the screen.

On the back of the device is a 0.3 megapixel camera with video recording support, a speaker and a circle with the Android logo.

At the bottom of the device there is a slot for micro SD memory cards, a button to turn on and lock the device, and a lever to block the hardware buttons of the device (only game keys are blocked) - a useful thing if you want to use the touch screen and are afraid to hit other buttons.

On top of the device are two PSP gaming rocker keys, volume buttons, a 3.5mm headphone audio output, a video output, and a USB cable connector.

Shell, applications, games and game console emulation

After turning it on, we see that it works on a special firmware, based on Android, tailored to the screen size, usage specifics and hardware buttons of the device. The alternative launcher is very convenient and its use is intuitive. Here you can quickly launch games preinstalled on the device (about 10 Android games), emulators (NES, Sega Mega Drive, Nintendo 64, GameBoyAdvance, MAME preinstalled), Video Player, Audio Player, Web Browser, Photo Gallery and Camera.

Using the browser, despite the small screen size, is quite convenient.

You can also open the usual Android application menu and launch any application - the JXD S601 fully supports the Android Market (and is updated to Google Play) without "dancing with a tambourine". You can install absolutely any application or game from the Android Market and use it on your device.

Despite the resistive screen, the device can also play android games, which work very quickly, thanks to the good stuffing of the device.

But of course the main purpose of the JXD S601 is to emulate game consoles. As I mentioned earlier, emulators of NES (Dendy), Sega Mega Drive, Nintendo 64, GameBoyAdvance and MAME slot machine are preinstalled and configured for device buttons, but you can install absolutely any other console emulators for Android, for example, from Sony Play Station is the first generation, the games of which run perfectly on this device without noticeable brakes.

With all the emulators pre-installed in the device, there are good sets of pre-installed games for them (several dozen), for example:

    Super Mario for Dendy

    Sonic for Sega Mega Drive

    Ms PacMan for Nintendo 64

    Dragon Ball for GBA

A beautiful fighting game for the MAME machine

You can install any other games (ROMs) for emulators yourself by downloading and copying them to a special folder for ROMs on your device.

I would like to note that playing on the JXD S601 is not just convenient, but very convenient! In my opinion, it is even more convenient than on emulated consoles, thanks to the very good location and shape of the buttons on the PSP, the design of which was borrowed by the Chinese in this device. Suffice it to recall the square, uncomfortable joystick from Dendy, which quickly tired fingers. The screen resolution is ideal for emulated games, color reproduction and viewing angles are excellent, the brightness is sufficient, which allows you to fully enjoy the games from your childhood and immerse yourself in nostalgia. I was pleasantly pleased that the set-top box does not heat up during its operation, unlike cheap Chinese tablets.

All emulated games on the device run very fast, there were no problems with sound and video, there are no brakes even on the Nintendo 64 emulator in 3D games.

The analog joystick present on the device works in all emulators as navigation keys.

    Additional features

You can also connect a regular USB joystick to the device via USB-host, and output the image to the TV via TV Out, thereby getting a full-fledged set-top box (which you emulate on the device).

Through USB-host, you can connect a USB modem to the device, getting the Internet on the device without using Wi-Fi.

    JXD S601 Performance Testing

I tested the performance of the device in benchmarks, the results of which you can see below. Although, in my opinion, these results do not play any role, since the main purpose of this device is to emulate games for consoles that “just fly”.

    Quadrant benchmark result: 1692

    Antutu Benchmark result: 2353

    Electopia benchmark result:

    conclusions

Portable game console JXD S601, despite its low cost, is the best device for emulating game consoles today. However, you can also play regular Android games on it.

    Pros:
    - High speed of work
    - High build quality and plastic
    - Convenient buttons and their location
    - Lightness of the body
    - The battery holds 5 hours of games
    - Low price

    Minuses:
    - Resistive screen
