On the one hand, 3-4 hours is a good result for a portable device of such power. On the other hand, I wanted Nintendo to still make some kind of technological breakthrough. And it turns out that such highly advertised use cases in commercials (for example, on an airplane) are possible only if you always have a portable battery in your bag.

Switch has a manufacturing defect

Like almost any modern device, there are defective consoles in the first batches of Switch. Someone has a screen in the interference, someone constantly hangs games, others do not read cartridges. In general, there are enough problems. But this, unfortunately, happens quite often in the electronics industry - you can remember the problems with iPhones, the burning Note 7 from Samsung, and much more. Therefore, it is not so much the marriage in the first batches that is important here, but the reaction of Nintendo to all this - we hope that the company will overcome all the ailments of the device, and will also quickly change problematic consoles under warranty. In case you're wondering, here's a summary of all the Switch issues that players encountered at launch:

Switch - a console that can not be hidden from children

I rarely play video games at home because a small child doesn't have to see much else. The only thing I allow myself is FIFA 17. I allow myself blood, guts, murders in virtual spaces only when the child is already sleeping or staying with grandmothers.

So, Nintendo Switch is the first game console that I do not hide from my daughter. All games here are emphatically neat - no dismemberment, cruelty and other things. Zelda is generally similar to a Studio Ghibli cartoon, which even Hayao Miyazaki is not ashamed to show. And in this kind of "children's" line of games - one of the advantages of the device. Of course, I do not call for teaching children to play video games from childhood, and I understand perfectly well that any book at this age or an outdoor game will be perceived by the child better and will benefit him more, but Switch makes it possible not to hide your own gaming hobbies from children and definitely not frighten or do no harm even to the smallest daughters and sons.

There are very few games on the Switch yet, but there is one great one

The Switch launch lineup is one of the most boring and few in the history of the industry. But it also has a lot to choose from. The main lot for those who want to buy the console now is, of course, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This is a great game, one of the most highly rated in history. On review aggregator Metacritic.com, it currently has a score of 98 out of 100, the fourth highest score in history.

In addition to Zelda, you can pay attention to the collection of mini-games 1-2-Switch, which reveals the capabilities of the device (it contains a game about milking a cow, for example), or a funny Snipperclips puzzle about drawn men, which you can play with your child, as well as a clockwork dancing simulator Just Dance from Ubisoft. But in general, it's all crumbs. Major releases (other than Zelda) for the Switch are slated for the second half of the year, so unless you're a die-hard fan of Nintendo or modern devices, it's best to delay buying the device until the fall.

(Yet) no esports

When the Switch was first announced, Nintendo made an obvious nod to esports. In the video, you could see how real esportsmen trained on the new console, playing Splatoon. Obviously, Nintendo understands that esports is developing by leaps and bounds, and does not want to ignore it.

True, everything is still unclear with eSports on Switch. Splatoon 2, the co-op cartoon shooter that Nintendo is obviously betting on, will only be released in the summer, and then it will be possible to draw some conclusions. We hope that the Japanese company will really develop the esports direction, and not only in the main markets, but also in Russia, where Nintendo's position is not so strong. We are waiting for the release of the game with a busy schedule of events and tournaments, as well as some kind of intelligible concept for promoting eSports on Switch.

Switch is the perfect second console in the house

The official price for Switch in Russia is 22,499 rubles. Xbox One can be found cheaper, PS4 - a little more expensive. And this is an important question. Given the youth of the device, the small number of games and other things, it will be very difficult to get anyone other than geeks and Nintendo fans to buy the device here and now. But Switch, in our opinion, should not be considered a mainstream device, at least not yet. Now it's the perfect second gaming device in the house, and here's why.

Firstly, the sequels of all the great series from Nintendo will come out sooner or later - Zelda already, a new Mario game will be in the fall, Fire Emblem too, and maybe Metroid will be revived there. And you won't find these great games anywhere else.

Secondly, Switch truly offers you a unique gaming experience, anywhere - whether at home, even on the subway, even at work. This is nothing like a device. Unlike PS4, Xbox One and gaming PC, which overlap in many ways.

I was one of the most vocal opponents of the Nintendo Switch at the time of the announcement. I was annoyed by the strange positioning of the console, the weak line of games and the eternal Nintendo problems, like weak hardware.

After three weeks of communication with the Nintendo Switch, I still have a lot of questions for her. There are not enough games, the price is high, not all designer finds make me happy. But at the same time, it's impossible not to admit that the Switch is a big step forward for Nintendo, especially after the failure of the WiiU. In the announcement and the device, it is felt that the Japanese have learned many mistakes of the past and are now more careful about their products and, of course, fans.

Of course, now (I repeat) only three categories of people can be advised to Switch - geeks who do not miss a single important announcement or device, Nintendo fans, as well as people who want to play Zelda (which, however, is also on WiiU) . We advise everyone else to wait until autumn. There will be a lot of long-awaited games, besides, Nintendo promised a few more high-profile announcements. Speaking in theatrical language, pre-premiere screenings began on March 3, and in the fall we will have a full-fledged premiere of the device. In any case, if everything goes well, we will tell you more than once about the Nintendo Switch.

Most computer gamers sincerely believe that esports is the exclusive prerogative of the RS. Indeed, most of the major tournaments are held in computer games, and champions in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, Quake III Arena or Counter strike are almost national heroes. Nevertheless, video games are also gradually making their way to fame. And although console esports is still an exotic phenomenon, it is simply impossible not to notice its existence.

dark past

It is generally accepted that the foundation of modern eSports was laid by games for the PC. But if you dig deeper, you will find that the first amateur tournaments for console fighting games were held long before ID Software started developing DOOM. Why, even before id itself was born!

Despite its long history, console esports has been almost invisible all these years - not least because consoles, until recently, did not know how to go online. The situation began to change only in 2003, when World Cyber ​​Games Xbox-action wormed its way into the company of original writing titles Halo from Microsoft and Bungie, the most played game on the Xbox Live! servers at the time. Then this event went almost unnoticed: there were no well-known players among the “boxers” yet, and the press paid more attention to traditional disciplines, mentioning Halo only in passing.

Console camp next year WCG grew a little - along with Halo, a racing arcade was included in the tournament program Project Gotham Racing 2(again with Xbox). But she also remained in the shadows: competitions in Need for Speed ​​Underground.

However, the absence of a clear result is also a result. Such attention to console games from the WCG Organizing Committee gave impetus to the emergence of many small tournaments, and made players think that console games should not be written off. Did not sit idly by and developers with publishers.

Ambitious present

Organizers WCG 2005 approached the choice of games more thoroughly. Instead of Project Gotham Racing 2, it was decided to use a fighting game Dead or Alive Ultimate. This decision is extremely correct, because fighting games have always been considered the “titular” games of consoles. Good fighting games on PC can be counted on the fingers of one hand, while on consoles they come out all the time. Yes, and at amateur tournaments, console players mainly play fighting games, and not shooters and races. Another thing is that Dead or Alive Ultimate is not the best, but the only possible choice: there are better fighting games ( Tekken 5 and Soul Calibur 2), but they don't have the advanced online features of Dead or Alive Ultimate.

The second console game at WCG 2005 will be Halo 2. The game sold insanely, so there will certainly be many contenders for the Halo 2 world title.

Foggy future

The key problem with console games, which has been and (still) remains the main obstacle to their use as tournament disciplines, is the limited network capabilities of consoles. Of the consoles of the current generation, only the Xbox is more or less friends with online.

But even if the problems with accessing the Web are resolved, this will not guarantee a bright esports future for console games. Another couple of stones in the garden of consoles - management and a limited set of genres. The gamepad is uncomfortable to play action games (especially after years of keyboard and mouse play) and nearly impossible to play strategy games. Meanwhile, five of the eight disciplines of WCG 2005 are just action games and strategies. The gamepad is good only in the case of fighting games, but with them, as we have already said, there is another problem - there is no normal multiplayer.

The situation can change only with the release of new consoles - Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Revolution. First, they will finally solve the problem of online play - Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo put online features as one of the main advantages of their consoles. Secondly, the “Revolution” will have a fundamentally new controller that can track its own movements in space (see the Special section for details). If Nintendo does not blunder, such a device will be a great replacement for a mouse. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will come with traditional gamepads as standard, but it's possible they'll release something similar in the future as well. And then sane shooters and strategies will finally appear on consoles.

Today, the concept of eSports is strongly associated exclusively with personal computers. Games for it were created focused on the PC. These are the popular World of Tanks, StarCraft, DotA, League of Legends, Counter Strike and some others. The best teams gather for international competitions, read about iqoption reviews, arrange hot interactive battles, and the winners take home cups and decent winning amounts. To get into the national team from your country is considered among the e-sportsmen as "aerobatics" and the pinnacle of "career growth". And who would not want to play their favorite game, defeat opponents and get a lot of money for it?

Sony will create their own League of Cyber ​​Champions

From now on, eSports will also accept those who prefer Sony game consoles for a pleasant pastime. This unexpected news was reported by the managers of the Japanese company. They recently announced the creation of the Official Playstation League. Within its framework, international e-sports competitions among the teams of various countries will be regularly held. Moreover, absolutely all owners of PlayStation consoles will be able to compete in gaming achievements. Thanks to a specially created service focused on these devices, information about achievements in games and iqoption, as well as the number of points scored will be recorded in the player's PSN account. Very soon it will be possible to try your hand at a fair fight. The end of the season is scheduled for January 11, 2015.

Spain, Italy and Portugal will be the first to access the service. After that, the service will spread to other European countries. It is still difficult to say when he will come to Russia.

The creators of the League have also decided on the games in which both individual athletes and teams will compete. These are Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, FIFA 15, DRIVECLUB, NBA. Perhaps later this list will be replenished. Sony promised that the winners will receive valuable prizes from them. If competition within the League becomes popular, we can expect the creation of similar communities under the leadership of other game console manufacturers.

Today we will talk a little about a rather controversial topic. In the head of an average esports fan from the CIS, the realization that you can’t compete much on consoles is firmly seated. Shooting jesters with a joystick is inconvenient, RTS and MOBA are out of the question. Yes, there is a FIFA series, but as it shows the latest research "VKontakte", the game was mentioned only 118 thousand times in the social network during the year, and CS:GO - 1.7 million times. Abroad, consoles have a slightly different attitude, and it can come to us.

We will look at the issue from two angles: we will evaluate the latest major esports console tournaments and games that came out in 2017 on consoles. Let's start with the aforementioned FIFA series. It is unlikely that anyone will argue that playing interactive football with a mouse and keyboard is, to put it mildly, stupid. The simulator is updated every year and it is unlikely that in the next 5-10 years the developers will stop releasing a product so beloved by a wide audience.

What about tournaments? In FIFA 17, two fairly large tournaments took place this year: the Ultimate Team Championship ($400,000) and the Interactive World Cup ($268,000). In total, only in this particular version of the game for the period of its active life, $1,452,330 were played at 41 tournaments. True, esportsmen from Russia won only $2.8 thousand on them. The figures are taken from Esports Earnings, where domestic events are clearly not taken into account.

And they are. The Interactive Football Cup of Russia ended quite recently, there is also the RFPL cyberfootball championship and many other tournaments. And most of it is played on consoles.

From the mainstream we move on to more ambiguous things. In addition to football, it is much more convenient to play all kinds of fighting games with a joystick. Their most serious esports representative is the Street Fighter series. In large tournaments, players control characters using special controllers (with a trigger and keys, like on slot machines), but this does not make the discipline less console.

In 2017, Capcom held the Street Fighter World Championship ($380,000), and ELEAGUE made their own tournament ($250,000). There were no CIS players seen at these tournaments. It is quite logical, because the good old Mortal Kombat is more popular here. Nevertheless, both of these titles are popular eSports disciplines abroad.

With us, fighting games rather help to relax in the company of friends. And there are no really big tournaments (such as EPICENTER or StarLadder) in the region. Therefore, it is pointless to spend a lot of time on training.

In general, many Western console projects are not very popular in the CIS. You must have heard of the Halo series of games. So, at the Halo 5: Guardians World Championship in 2016, $2.5 million were raffled off. This is one of the largest prize pools in esports in general, but this discipline missed our region. Perhaps just because Halo is a console exclusive. And as we said earlier, we are not used to playing shooters with a gamepad.

By the way, there are many such disciplines that are played on consoles abroad, but here on PC: the Call of Duty series, Rainbow Six Siege, Overwatch, etc. World tournaments on them are held both on computers and on consoles.

What about 2017 console exclusives? Are there esports disciplines that have been neglected among them? Probably not. But there are games for which it is quite possible to hold a tournament, and it would be interesting to watch it. Such projects are Gran Turismo Sport and Injustice 2. The first is interesting for its genre, because we don't have many racing esports disciplines. We wrote about the second in some detail in the previous article. Read, get inspired.

PS: PlayerUnknown "s Battlegrounds. Again. You will be surprised, but everyone's favorite battle royale is also on Xbox One. So far, all tournaments in this discipline have been held on boyar PCs, but who knows what will happen in 2018 ... A degree of fun when playing PUBG with a joystick can increase noticeably.

What is the result? It is worth recognizing that there are eSports on consoles. But the share of console tournaments in our region is extremely small. In the rest of the world, the situation is much better in this regard. And the main reason for this is only one thing: tournament organizers are afraid to take risks. The CS:GO and Dota 2 event will steadily gather a huge number of spectators and players. Will it be possible to drag people to a big Mortal Kombat or Injustice tournament? Is not a fact. But the same Dota 2 has acquired the status of a serious esports discipline, not least thanks to The International. So we just have to wait until someone announces a Gran Turismo Sport tournament with a prize pool of a million dollars. Then, of course, we will dust off our consoles and start playing. In the meantime, this has not happened, the situation will develop in approximately the same usual manner.
