Homemade wooden puzzles.

You always want to do something that will be incomprehensible to others. Simply put, a trick over which you can break your head and how it is done is left a secret. It is to such puzzles that the following craft belongs, which you can do yourself.

To do this, we take a wooden board, approximately 200 x 70 x 30 and make two or three cuts in it to get 3 or 4 spikes, a ledge 40 mm high. Something like a comb with several teeth. After that, we lower the extreme spike into hot water and cook it for 20 minutes.

During the cooking process, the wood is filled with water and becomes elastic, so it can be compressed, but with great effort. We take the workpiece and insert it with a welded spike into a vise. I squeeze the spike, which becomes shorter and leave it for a day or two in a vice.

After that, we take out the workpiece from the vise and drill a hole in it from the side of the flattened spike. Insert the bolt. We cook the extreme spike again in water, where it is restored to its original form.

The finished craft can be polished and varnished, so many will pick it up and wonder in surprise how the bolt got into the middle?

Homemade wooden puzzles presented on our website:

07.12.2014.

When making another wooden puzzle, I try to analyze the purely technological difficulties that arise in this process and find ways and methods to "increase labor productivity"...

All the experience I have accumulated allows me to safely say that most of the time is spent on fitting glued parts - turning with a file or, conversely, sticking pieces of veneer to increase the thickness of any element. The reason for this is not enough (to put it mildly) high-quality initial bars, the cross section of which, as I have repeatedly noted, should be as close to square as possible. Tolerance, it seems to me, should be no more than two tenths of a millimeter.

Not having high-quality "precision" equipment for sawing boards like this, I have to be content with an ordinary old circular saw. Despite the recently installed "modern" saw blade with a fine tooth, a number of problems remained - insufficiently high shaft speeds, beats due to many years of wear (after all, REAL sailing yachts had to be built! And not one ...)

In general, no matter how hard you try, the bars turn out to be very far from ideal. And, even if in a new miter box it is possible to file them into quite acceptable blanks in the sense of perpendicularity and length, a multiple of the modular cube, then after gluing, a long and dreary "finishing with a file" is inevitable..

At the same time, I noticed a long time ago: if the original bars turned out to be of quite high quality, it takes very little time to make a puzzle out of them. And vice versa.

In this regard, I once made a "world-historical" decision to make a planer out of the manual electric planer in my arsenal. No sooner said than done!

The main constructive idea of my "well, how" is quite obvious - do not let the planer cut more than necessary. To do this, on an even piece of chipboard of a suitable size, I fixed two guide pine bars, on the upper edges of which I screwed strips of plastic with self-tapping screws, choosing their total thickness so that, sliding along them, the working plane of the planer was parallel to the base.

I don’t know about other planers (somehow I never looked closely at them), but mine has a special ledge for planing a corner (as joiners say - quarters). Therefore, the guide bars had to be made of various sections, and then additionally leveled with strips of polystyrene and drawing paper.

Before planing, I measure the smallest thickness of the workpiece with a caliper and calculate the size of the lining (a set of strips of plastic of different thicknesses, as well as cardboard and whatman paper). The guides do not allow the planer to fall below a certain height, while in several passes mercilessly cutting off everything that is above it, which, in fact, is required ...

Already the first full cycle of tests (from the blank to the finished product) showed the full viability of my idea! The time spent on making the next puzzle has decreased MUCH! And it is right!

Also in this "production-technological block" I present a number of improvements to my miter box.

First of all, I installed on the left side a wide thrust pad made of a piece of laminated plywood, on which a piece of aluminum profile is attached for the most dense fixation of the workpiece to be cut. On the right side, I redid the restrictive device. Now it is a bracket fastened with an M8 bolt, in which a long bolt rotates, also an M8 with a lock nut. The bolt is inserted into plastic nozzles of various lengths, against which a wooden blank rests.

I cut off a bar, measured the length with a caliper, twisted the screw half a turn, if necessary, fixed the nut, and - forward. With a song!

In order not to often rebuild the emphasis, I usually saw the parts for several puzzles at once, pre-selecting them for workpieces of the same section.

I glue the parts on a flat surface using home-made polystyrene square conductors.

Homemade wooden puzzle "Quartet 8L2".

This is a double puzzle: from four identical parts, you need to assemble either one "thick" frame, or a kind of chain of two links. Wooden.

This puzzle is one of the favorites of my students in the children's art school. By the way, the task of assembling one thickened frame has a very beautiful solution with central symmetry! It is necessary to arrange all four parts in relation to each other in a special way and then simply move them to the center at the same time ...

The idea of this puzzle was inspired by the similar puzzle "Pyramid of balls", attached to the issue 9 of the magazine "Entertaining puzzles" by DeAgostini publishing house. This puzzle is described in our project.

In addition, I, intending to make a certain amount of so-called. rope puzzles, not so long ago I quite successfully bought in the store "everything for needlework" all sorts of different wooden "cools" - rings, balls, etc.

The only thing left to do was to sit down at the Autodesk 3d Max 3D modeling program and develop your own original version of the pyramid details. The efforts were crowned with quite a worthy result, which was even reflected on the puzzlewillbeplayed.com website.

My puzzle (unlike the one mentioned by DeAgostinevsky) has only one solution, which is confidently confirmed by the program.

Experience has shown that of all the variety of puzzles I have made in a year and a half, children most of all like "miniatures", in which three or four parts are required to assemble a 3x3x3 cube. A short break is just enough to quickly deal with one or two such problems. As a rule, I advise children to do this in pairs - first everyone takes apart their puzzle, and then they change. Very comfortably.

In this regard (and at the numerous requests of students), in a very short time I made several similar puzzles at once, which are always a success with my wards. All of them are approximately the same in terms of complexity of both manufacturing and solution. Highly recommend to everyone. whoever reads these lines, make these puzzles, so to speak, for the home, for the family. In addition to the development of volumetric-spatial thinking of your children and loved ones, the problem of how to entertain guests while dumplings are being cooked on the stove (pizza is baked in the oven, vodka is cooling in the freezer - underline the necessary) ...

I deliberately do not provide solutions to these puzzles here so as not to deprive you of the pleasure of finding it yourself. For reference: the average record of our artist for the most difficult of them is 20-30 seconds. Are you weak?

Homemade wooden puzzle "Three Easy Pieces".

As the name implies, the puzzle consists of three parts, according to the author - simple ones. At the expense of "simple", by the way, I would, for example, argue with him ...

Homemade wooden puzzle "Corner Lock".

In addition to the three intricately shaped pieces, this puzzle comes with another modular cube, which, when the puzzle is assembled, is clamped quite tightly on the edge of the 3x3x3 cube. For decoration, you can paint it in a different color.

Homemade wooden puzzle "Neat Cakes".

Unlike the previous two, this puzzle is not about knots, but about packing puzzles. That is, for its storage, it is desirable to make a box as well. In order not to lose pies ("Neat Cakes" means "neat cakes")

Homemade wooden puzzle "Cube Kid".

And now anyone can visit the personal website of Leonid Mochalov, where a large number of original developments of this inventor are presented. Some of his work was featured on the project PhotoDreamStudio .

Below is a description of the puzzle "Cube Kid" by Leonid Mochalov.

Homemade wooden puzzle "Tom's Little Box".

In this puzzle, the author, despite the minimum of funds, even managed to implement multi-pass! It is clear that level 2.3 is not so outrageous, but it can confuse another unlucky lover of "taking everything in a hurry." Don't fool around!!!

Our project featured the "Stand Up Cube" puzzle, which I called a real gem of my collection of wooden puzzles.

From the moment it passed through my hands, I have not left the desire to create something similar myself. But I still don't understand how it is possible to design a puzzle with gravity in mind?! The program "BurrTools" does not provide such an opportunity. At least my knowledge of this program (or, more precisely, English) does not allow me to think otherwise...

I had to resort to the old grandfather method - the current full-size layout. I sawed with a small supply of blocks with a length of 1, 2 and 3 modules and began to search for a stable shape from the resulting parts. For temporary fastening of the elements, at first I tried to use double-sided tape, but then I switched to Moment glue - it holds perfectly, and if necessary it can be easily torn off.

As a sustainable form, after some deliberation, I decided to take the cross. And there is no need to look for any analogies here !!!

The main design was carried out in the Autodesk 3D Max program, and the stability check, as I said, was done on a real layout.

Of course, to present a stable figure of a cross in the form of a set of some rather complex elements is not a difficult task, if, in addition, the "BurrTolls" program is also involved. But to ensure that the details are as simple as possible (similar, for example, to the elements of the "Heine's Cubes"), and even that the required figure is assembled in many ways, but there was only one stable option - here I had to sweat!

However, after some amount of physical and mental effort, the goal was achieved!

But the most interesting was yet to come!

After analyzing (now without any jokes) the elements of my brainchild in the "BurrTools" program, I found out to my great joy and surprise that from these ten different parts, with a total volume of 48 cubes, it is possible, in addition to a stable cross, to add a large number of different figures, including - block 4x4x3, which is perfect as a package!

So my most interesting author's puzzle "48 cubes" was born at that time!

Many figures invented by me have only one solution, but even, for example, laying in a box, despite the presence of more than 20 thousand options, is a very, very complicated matter. In addition to the "Cross", I found a few more "stable" figures. That is, this puzzle game can be safely used as a children's building kit!

Watch the video of the step-by-step assembly of the Standing Cross puzzle:

Below are drawings of some figures that can be put together from the details of my author's puzzle "48 cubes" with an indication of the number of possible options.

A separate series of tasks is the assembly of parallelepipeds. I draw your attention to the fact that the assembly of some boxes does not require the entire set of ten parts!

The puzzle game "48 cubes" is fully related to packaging, so a box is needed to store it. From my own AUTHOR'S experience, I know that putting all the details back into the box sometimes takes a lot of time, and remembering at least one of the 23,000 solution options somehow does not reach the hands (more precisely, the head). Therefore, I am publishing a scheme for packing ten pieces of the 48 cubes puzzle into a box.

Looking ahead, I’ll say: it somehow happened that lately I gradually began to produce mainly my own, author’s puzzles. And it pleases! The process has started!

In the next issues, I will introduce the visitors of the project PhotoDreamStudio with a few of my own, dare I say it, really cool, original and HARD puzzles! See you!

Lately I've been starting to SERIOUSLY think about how to make my puzzles not only for myself (beloved), but also for sale (for money). I intend to make the main gestures in this direction in the spring, but already now I am ready, in principle, to start doing something to order. So write [email protected] !
As they say, if we agree on the price and terms, then I will do it and send it.

We all strive to surprise our relatives, neighbors and friends with something like this. We have such a vein, although we try to hide it, it's not entirely ethical. But the desire to surprise wins. One way or another, we offer you a product, looking at which there is something to think about.

We are talking about an iron object, which can be a nail or a bolt, located in a wooden product, with cutouts. When considering, the question arises of how a bolt or nail could be inserted there. On this occasion, you can organize a whole scientific conference.

Everyone will examine the product with curiosity, check whether the extreme part is glued, through which, logically, an iron part, nail or bolt should have been inserted. And hardly anyone can guess that when cooked in water, the wood becomes soft and if you use it, you get such a trick.

To make such a puzzle, a piece of board is taken and four huge spikes are cut into it. Then the extreme spike is dipped in water and boiled for 20 minutes. After that, the spike is clamped in a vise and compressed. Leave it in this position for a day or two.

After that, the piece of wood is taken out and scrolled from the side of the compressed spike, which holds the shape, the hole. Insert a bolt or nail into the hole, then weld the extreme spike again and it takes its original shape. Now everyone will think how the bolt got there.

Are anchor bolts suitable for wood? How to properly anchor a massive product - a lantern, a chandelier or a hanging bed - to a wooden beam or wall? What other ways can wooden structures be connected? Let's figure it out.

Varieties of anchors

The word "anchor" itself is borrowed from the German language and literally means "anchor". Anchors are used for .

The following types of these fasteners can be distinguished:

Type Short description
Spacers Friction force is used to hold the base. To maximize it, the fastener inserted into the hole is expanded. For this purpose, a wedge stop with a thread inside, a plastic dowel, etc. is used.
Persistent Fixation is provided by embedding the expanded or ribbed part of the fastener in the base. This is how the foundation anchors used to install massive equipment on a reinforced concrete foundation are arranged.
Adhesive Adhesion to the base is ensured by supplying an adhesive compound (usually a mixture of synthetic resin with a hardener) into the gap between the walls of the hole and the ribbed fastener rod
Bolt Molly This type of anchor is used for attaching attachments to hollow partitions with low mechanical strength (GVL, GKL, chipboard, hollow brick). When the bolt is tightened, it expands the outer shell to the sides, forming an abutment with a large area of contact with the partition

Useful: adhesive anchors can often be found under a different name - chemical.

And now let's try to analyze which type of anchor suits which:

  • The Molly bolt requires a significant area of voids within the structure. As a result, it can only be used for hanging relatively light products on thin partitions made of boards, lining or chipboard;
