Throughout its existence, Piranha Bite has made exactly one game - and this is Gothic. The irony of life is that even if you do something well, very quickly there will be someone who will do the same many times better - and therefore the stagnating Gothic series by the third part has lost its army of fans who have dispersed through TES, Neverwinter Nights and other games that were not shy about borrowing Gothic mechanics. Piranha Bite quarreled with her publisher, lost all rights to her own offspring, but did not stop bending her line - creating a project in a new setting, but with the old spirit. This is how Risen appeared - a complex and deep role-playing game with an unusual combat system, a kind of pumping and an invariable path from rags to riches. Many people liked the approach of the project - we will advise them several similar games on Risen.

Let Dark Souls be considered a new round in the development of role-playing games, but the local combat mechanics are the purest distillate from the combat system of the classic Gothic, which then migrated to Risen. Focus on the enemy, crushing blows into powerful and simple ones, various blocks and dodges - all this is very similar to Gothic, with one caveat - Dark Souls has developed all these systems very seriously. That is why each weapon here is felt in a new way, each enemy is unique, and the local locations themselves are a real deadly maze.

Dark Souls lives without the addition of narrative and cut-scenes, leaving the player alone with the mechanics and their own curiosity. You yourself come up with the mythology of the local universe, interpreting the events that take place and you yourself are studying the possibilities for passing the next level. Without exaggeration, a great game that changed the industry.

Gothic 3

In 2006, Piranha Bite were at the peak of their popularity. They received a huge development budget, enlisted the support of the press and fans, showed luxurious graphics and a huge world at exhibitions and were not afraid of a direct confrontation with TES: Oblivion, and then it came out ...

The third Gothic was the first game whose release gave rise to a real industrial scandal. Dead brakes, constant crashes, uneven balance and flying saves - all this had to be endured by the fans who bought the first edition of the game from stores. The Internet was weak in those days, and therefore a lot of patches had to be expected in the disks attached to game magazines - and only a month after the release of the game, fans who already hated Gothic 3 were finally able to play it normally.

And the game turned out to be luxurious. A huge world with two dozen cities, a cool life simulation, a deep pumping system that does not incline you to choose a specialization, and a redesigned combat system - all this literally sucked the player into Gothic. Alas, the devastating reviews and total negativity from the players in the first weeks after the release completely cut down all the possibilities of a hype - and therefore the third "Gothic" did not sell well, and the developers transferred all the developments to Risen.

One of Risen's biggest hits is its setting. The pirate theme turned out to be close to the players, which is why even those who did not like the original Gothic played Risen. Clearly inspired by Risen, Ubisoft decided to make their Assassin's Creed about pirates. It turned out even better.

Unlike Risen, there is no such attention to character leveling, its loot and, for example, magic resistance - instead, Assassin's Creed offers an unusual combat system where the player has to act on instincts and reactions - counterattack in time, remove an enemy block on a swing, and for example run away when there are too many enemies.

But the main "chip" of the game was naval ship battles. They took control of the schooner, equipped it with guns, recruited a team and forward. You can both fight with the help of guns and cores, and take enemy ships for boarding. It looks simply bewitching, and when, after a successful shot, the enemy ship goes to the bottom, you experience real delight. Games have not given such emotions for a long time, because Black Flag is still considered the best of Assassin's Creed.

Elex

Elex is another direct continuation of Piranha Bite ideas. After finishing with the Risen trilogy, the developers moved on to another project - and made, perhaps, their best game.

Elex is striking in scale. A huge fantasy world divided into three radically opposite factions: augmented people with the latest technology; priests relying on magical artifacts and barbarians endowed with insane power are at enmity with each other on a mainland full of various anomalies. In the middle of all this is you, with your philosophy and conviction.

Elex doesn't try to box the hero. You yourself choose the style of passage, proximity to factions and pumping. The hero is easily able to wield a ranged weapon or a staff, and if necessary, he can pick up a sword - but given the peculiarities of the local world, often, you still have to choose a pumping branch. However, due to the singularity and versatility of the local universe, Elex does not get bored at all. This is a very deep, thoughtful, complex role-playing game that embodies all the ideas laid down in the very first Gothic. A real swan song by Piranha Bite, for whom Elex is quite possibly the last game of the Risen type.

Gothic is an open world RPG game, and all the action takes place in a fantasy medieval world.

I'm a big fan of Gothic, other games in the series, and Piranha Bytes.

1 - Risen A: This is by far the best game that is similar to the Gothic series. Part 2 is already out. The handwriting of Piranha Bytes can be seen at every step: in quests, in the world, in monsters. The game is saturated with gothic, amazing monsters, caves, long-forgotten temples and towers. It should be noted the stability of the game from German developers. I think Ryzen will appeal to any fan of Gothic and not only, especially for its atmosphere.

2 - Elder Scrolls (Oblivion, Morrowind, Skyrim)

In these games, like in no other, you can feel the taste of adventure. Before you is a gigantic world that needs your participation. In the Elder scrolls series, Skyrim has added a ton of side quests that are basically just as interesting as the main storyline.

3 - : Open world RPG based on Dungeons & Dragons

In this game, you take on the role of a commoner from a small village. It is this simpleton who will save the world. The main character will have to stop the evil, and in the process explore the beautiful world.

4 - Two Worlds II: Action RPG in an open fantasy world

A fairly solid game, however, with a boring combat system, which boils down to calling, and even without combos. The advantages of the game include good music and beautiful graphics. The game may not really appeal to everyone, but I recommend it to Gothic fans.

5 - Fable - The Lost Chapters: Great game, but without a huge open world

A wonderful game with a wonderful story and character change depending on the actions of the player. Although the world is not completely open, but it is beautifully designed and has a lot of play areas. The game is really captivating with its unusualness.

6 - Fallout 3: Post-apocalyptic RPG

Dreamed of visiting Chernobyl? I propose to look at the whole world after the apocalypse. A lot of gangs, mutants and anomalies are waiting for you in this game, and only the search for the remnants of civilizations does not allow you to stop. Extremely good open world game with great story and amazing atmosphere.

If these games are not enough for you, then you can look for more on retrostand.ru - a site with reviews, walkthroughs of games and many others.

Appeared at the turn of the millennium, the Gothic series of games left a noticeable mark on the genre of computer RPG games and for a long time represented a worthy alternative to The Elder Scrolls series until a conflict occurred between the publisher and developers from the Piranha Bytes studio, as a result of which the latter lost the right to develop projects by franchise.

The popularity of the series is indirectly evidenced by the huge number of mods for the three parts of Gothic. But, unfortunately, the fans have little reason to rejoice - after the publisher parted with the "piranhas", the series frankly "wasted" ... willy-nilly, one has to look for an alternative to their favorite game.

For inclusion in the selection, I consider it important not only genre correspondence and third-person view, but also the so-called “spiritual relationship”.

Risen (game series)

The plot is standard - the world of the game Risen is literally torn apart by Titans - powerful deities. The main protagonist (Nameless) is destined to save the world from destruction. Otherwise, Gothic fans will feel "at home" - the basis is built on absolutely the same game mechanics, starting with the basics (combat system, factions ...) and ending with the little things.

Risen is not just a series of games like Gothic, but the most spiritual successor developed by Piranha Bytes. And here the fans would rejoice, but only the first part of Risen came out really suitable, and the quality of the sequels was declining downward.

Divinity II: Ego Draconis + Flames of Vengeance

The Order of the Dragon Hunters pursues the goal of the complete destruction of the fire-breathing lizards and the Flame Knights - the once powerful allies of the people who betrayed them during the Great War. The main character is a rookie of the Order, but in the course of the game's plot we can become a dragon knight and incinerate everyone who gets in our way!

Divinity is an extremely diverse series of role-playing games - unlike Divine Divinity (which many contemporaries ) and the latest installments, which are classic party CRPGs, Divinity II: Ego Draconis (and in fact this is the third part of the series) - belongs to the same type of role-playing games games like Gothic.

Venetica

A game reminiscent of Gothic and Risen, set in a game world reminiscent of medieval Venice. In addition to the similarity in the combat system and the ability to complete tasks for different factions, Venetica has a mentoring system when, in order to master a particular skill, you need to “enroll as a student” with the corresponding teacher.

You can (and should) blame the game for a weak technical component, beyond all measure the "corridor" of locations and too easy battles.

Elex

A meteorite that fell on the planet Magalan, in addition to monstrous destruction, brought with it the mysterious element elex, which can be used for both magic and technology (if you choose this path, then ). Depending on the attitude to the "Elex", the local society is divided into 3 powerful factions, between which the protagonist will maneuver.

Another attempt by Piranha Bytes and again more questions than answers. The idea, as such, is great - techno-fantasy setting is still a rare guest in games and the mechanics familiar to fans of piranhas are in place, but ... gigantism + a small budget rarely (yes, perhaps - never!) lead to a suitable result.

The Elder Scrolls (game series)

The Elder Scrolls series of games is highly revered among CRPG fans for its unique atmosphere, and incredibly huge detailed game worlds (which are easy to get stuck in for hundreds of hours).

Any part of the TES series can be included in the selection of games similar to Gothic (for greater similarity, do not forget to switch the camera to the 3rd person view), and as a lover of "gray old times", I will especially highlight The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Released a year later than the very first Gothic, Morrowind is in no way inferior to it (and surpasses it in some components, IMHO).

and thanks to mods, Morrowind is relevant to this day

Fable (game series)

Obviously, when developing the first part of Fable, its creator Peter Molyneux was clearly impressed by the Japanese classics - the research mechanics, the combat system, the interface (partially) and even the animation of movement, then everything reminds of The Legend of Zelda series (meaning parts series with a 3rd person camera perspective).

But, if we talk about the setting and the corresponding atmosphere, then in these components Fable has much more in common with the Gothic style. Yes, here we have the beginning of the industrial revolution, and not the “pure” Middle Ages, but in the “Gothic spirit”, the worlds of these games are close.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

In fact, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a hodgepodge of various games, but ... in a good sense of the word, fans of various game series will easily see elements similar to their favorite games.

Open world and "pathos behind the scenes" - a big hello, graphic style - similar to Fable from the word strongly, dialogue selection wheel - as if taken straight from the games of the Mass Effect series, the combat system - like in slashers and God of War "of the old spill ”, and as a “cherry on the cake” - guilds and an abundance of quest tasks. Definitely, Gothic fans have something to do here :)

The Witcher (game series)

I met the opinion that if the "piranhas" did not stop working on the series that brought them fame, then convergent evolution would lead to what, over time, in its modern guise. It's hard to say whether it would be one way or another, but the fact that the second and third parts of The Witcher are close in spirit to Gothic ... is hard to deny.

The main difference between the game series, perhaps, lies in the very personality of Geralt - his character and motives were set by Pan Sapkowski in the literary source, while the authors of Gothic in this regard have "free hands". This is not a plus, not a minus, but simply a fact that should be borne in mind.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen

Fantasy setting, action-combat, an abundance of quests, and ... it is possible to list similar elements for a long time, but the game is not included in the selection for this. Dragon's Dogma, like Gothic, is charming in its imperfection and, in this case, this is almost a plus.

It's not about some technical shortcomings, but about some understatement regarding both the plot and game mechanics. Playing superficially, you will not see even half of the opportunities that the game provides, you need to thoroughly "head" immerse yourself in the study of the game world, carefully reading the dialogues and rummaging through every corner.

Gothic is an epoch-making series of role-playing games in which we reincarnated as strong warriors with magical abilities and went on an unforgettable adventure, wanting to save the world. But all games are played sooner or later, sometimes even several times. Of course, mods are coming out, for example, Gothic X Project. But I don’t want to repeat the same thing, although it would still be nice to return to your favorite atmosphere. For such a case, there are games similar to the legendary Gothic. We will consider them. This will be a review from a respected portal which makes the list extremely useful. We have a lot of reviews and previews, so read on.

In the games from the list, you will control a character from a third person and guide him through the story, facing many challenges and using available equipment to complete quests. In games like the famous Gothic, there are always:
- atmospheric soundtrack;
- large open world;
- fantasy elements.
Vivid examples include The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Morrowind and Skyrim. Especially The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim. We invite users of our portal to learn more about similar games.

Risen - Inquisition or bandits

Almost like in the third Gothic, here the beginning of the game is marked by the arrival of the hero on the island. True, in Riesen this did not happen of his own free will. Together with the Inquisitor Mendoza and the gypsy Sarah, the hero tried to destroy the Titan. But he turned out to be stronger, as a result of which Mendoza teleported, and the hero and Sara almost drowned. Once on the island, the player will be prompted to choose an opposing side. You can become a bandit or join the Inquisition. The game is not allowed to change this information without the written confirmation of the player in the form of a click in the appropriate box.

A little later in the story, the character learns the plans of the High Inquisitor, who wants to penetrate the mouth of a mysterious volcano, where incredible power may be stored. To do this, he asks the hero to get five crystal disks - the keys to the indestructible door to the volcano. Having obtained everything necessary after titanic difficult quests, the player will be able to please the inquisitor with the keys. It is better to do this without a cheat, which somehow simplifies the game. What the player learns after opening the door will change their perception of the world of Risen Action. We will not spoil, so as not to spoil the pleasure of passing. Let's just say that the developers have prepared a lot of interesting things for fans of role-playing adventures, just like in Neverwinter Nights 2. By the way, the project was released on Windows Mac and Xbox.

Fable 3 - another revolution

The action of the third part of this Gothic-type game takes place fifty years after the events of the second. It turned out that the main character of “Fable 2”, who became the king, died, leaving behind heirs. The eldest son in Fable 3 rules the kingdom, having a younger brother (or sister, depending on the player's choice). The player will take control of a blood relative of the current ruler and make a revolution. Why? It turns out that the king turned into a tyrant and made the life of his subjects unbearable.

The main character needs to throw him off the throne and join the ranks of the great kings himself. Only after the revolution it turns out that the former tyrant was not so stupid. Soon the army will arrive, which appears once in a thousand years. Prepare for her arrival. And this can only be done by a tyrant of subjects. The player in this series will have an important choice - to follow the lead of friends and remain weak in the face of terrible danger, or do everything, even the worst, to survive. There will be no clearly white or black deeds like "Gothic" - any action will bring positive and negative consequences. Other projects already proposed at the moment also have hints of such a system. A mention in this context is worthy of Two Worlds II.

The Witcher 1 2 3 - Invincible Warrior

The magical adventures of a grey-haired fighter with gothic monsters were successfully transferred from books to virtual reality. The developers have come up with an exciting RPG project in the action genre, which combines everything that you can enjoy while holding a sword and traveling through an open fantasy world. They created large open locations with amazing landscapes.

There are many similarities between The Witcher and Gothic, but the first has stepped far ahead in terms of technology. The Witcher 2 has gained immense popularity. And the third part of The Witcher Wild Hunt RPG franchise has generally become an ideal for most gamers. In terms of graphics, dynamics, storytelling quality and combat mechanics, the game is one of the best. The main character Geralt is now known to the whole world, largely due to his brutality and ability to seduce the most beautiful women in his path. He even became the hero of Soulcalibur VI. However, the above is not enough to fight monsters - Geralt owns magical techniques and knows how to destroy each kind of monsters. This game is really similar to Gothic - try it! Enjoy the gameplay and setting and look for more information on the official website. The Witcher 3 is a must play!

Dark Souls is an incredibly difficult game

Any gamer knows how hard it is to defeat bosses in the action rpg “Dark Souls”. From the first part, the game was released in order to test the strength of players accustomed to casualness. And since we are looking at the best games similar to Gothic, it is worth noting that the setting here is made in the Gothic style - the environment is gloomy, terrifies the traveler and encourages flight. But there is nowhere to retreat, because the main character is a soul that has fallen into the afterlife, where it must find its place and continue to exist.

This is a role-playing game with good tools for pumping. Online games and flash games are famous for powerful artifacts. And here the items are not so powerful. Even with top-end inventory, you can “fly away” from an ordinary monster with a few hits, if you are not careful. Boss fights generally turn into an almost endless dance with dodges from titanic blows. By the way, Dark Souls Remastered yesterday announced another patch for Xbox - perhaps it will become even more difficult in it. Read the news on all updates on the official website.
