For its rich seventeen-year history, the series Devil May Cry managed to grow out of too bold continuation Resident Evil 2 into an independent game line, gain cult status, win a demonically huge army of fans, disappoint them a couple of times and get a remaster with improved graphics for the previous generation of consoles.

And so capcom- out of the best of intentions, of course, - I decided to introduce Sparda's son to modern consoles and bring the first two parts to the PC. Dante fans are happy, the publisher is preparing bags for the next portion of bills, and somewhere they are already sharing gossip about the new part of DMC.

What can go wrong?

Oh, once, yes again, yes many, many more times...

Last year was generally rich in all sorts of re-releases and porting games. Burning with demonic blood doom and snowy Skyrim showed what the Nintendo Switch is capable of. Double Fine rolled out Full Throttle with additional content and the ability to return the picture at any time as in 1995. And my favorite Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy… You can read more about recent top reissues in our 2017 recap.

As practice has shown, a remaster of an excellent game, and even more so from a series significant for the industry, may well count on success. It doesn't even require additional in-game content. It is enough to update the graphics and bring the picture up to modern standards.

Grateful fans will once again relive the adventures of their favorite heroes with pleasure, explore well-known universes, in the end, they will simply thank the developers once again with hard cash, and let the game warm the soul, lying on the shelf on Steam.

Devil May Cry HD Collection was no exception. Well, just think - a thousand rubles for games from the last decade. But there are three of them! On consoles, the price is generally twice as high, it’s a sin to complain ...

unhappy child

But disturbing news was not long in coming. A week before the release, the first part of the collection (not the Steam version) was given to Twitch Prime subscribers for free and reported numerous problems. Moreover, the distribution was planned to start on February 27, but was postponed due to technical difficulties. Coincidence? Oh sure…

In the end, it turned out that instead of a full-fledged HD re-release, the developers from Capcom simply ported the remaster of the same games for the Xbox 360 and PS3, stretched the picture to 1080p and increased the frame rate to sixty. At the same time, some of the textures were left from the last reissue - six years ago, by the way!

Of course, some walls, building models, surfaces look good: without angular transitions and blurred patterns. But the unupdated textures and models that burst onto the screen straight from the beginning of the 2000s look even more careless against their background.

And the increased FPS got out of control, as if they themselves fell under the influence of otherworldly forces. At a frequency above 60, the game speed increases in direct proportion to the increase in frames. The more powerful the hardware, the faster the game. And believe me, in a slasher game where fluidity of movement, speed of reaction and animation timing play a major role in the gameplay, the acceleration of the game spoils the whole process. Because of this, the whole impression of the game is spoiled.

Other "lucky ones" have the opposite situation: the action slows down a lot, especially in combat. The frame problem can be fixed by turning on v-sync, but this feature is not provided in the build menu. The three games have a common launcher, but in it you can only adjust the resolution, window display mode and language. The videos on the game engine and the menu were not touched at all. They look unsightly, and even go in the old 4:3 format. Do I need to clarify that this very “launcher” is just a launch menu, a separate window from which you can open other windows with the actual games? Some problems can be solved using the NVIDIA Control Panel and other similar applications - but only a part.

But that's not all! The very quality of the game has not only remained the same, it has deteriorated! The blood textures are overgrown with pixels, losing some of the resolution. When shot disappeared part of the effects. The image and subtitles in cutscenes no longer match the sound. The sound in general suffered a lot - cyclic sound effects are superimposed inaccurately, and the overall frequency has dropped.

Management is also not so easy. Some controllers are not recognized by the game. And if you were going to play any game from this kit without a gamepad (although I personally would not wish such an enemy), you can relax - the controls for the keyboard are not sharpened, all the button icons are straight from the Xbox controller.

For the sake of objectivity, I note that the last attempt to make friends with the third part of the series and personal computers was even worse. The maximum resolution is 1024x768, crashes and other joys in Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition did not pass by the players unnoticed. There is something to compare.

And not everyone has technical problems in the new collection. On Steam, the number of negative reviews complaining about the crooked port is approximately 25% of all ratings. And I would not focus on this if I personally did not encounter problems. In the end, I managed to eliminate most of the problems and bring the collection to a playable state.

Of course, all the negatives relate to the quality of the re-release, and perhaps the publisher will soon fix the problems with a patch. There are no complaints about the games themselves. Despite his impressive age, Dante cheerfully crushes opponents - and he himself is no less effectively pierced through with sharp objects.

Directing has stood the test of time, in this regard, the videos look better than other modern cinema (especially the videos from the third part). For those who missed the beginning of the Demon Hunter story, this is a good opportunity to catch up. Yes, and veterans of the series will be interested again to knock on the head of a conceited brother. Over the years, only the plot has inevitably grown old and seems hackneyed.

Be that as it may, Capcom released a crooked port of the last re-release with a tightened resolution and an honest sixty frames. It is difficult to call such a hack a new and full-fledged re-release. If you are unlucky with bugs, there will be a reason to thank you again valve for the refund button. If you are one of those lucky ones who have been spared performance problems, this is your chance to return to the exciting adventures of Dante, including on PC. Legends of the genre and in our time are played damn well. These are the best games of their time. A plus Devil May Cry 2.

In this article, we will look at the history of the creation of the popular Devil May Cry slasher series and understand the plot

In 1999, as planned by Capcom, the development of a new license plate was to begin. The producer of the project Shinji Mikami invites Hideki Kamiya to become a director. Kamiya already had experience working on the first two parts. A talented Japanese decides that the project needs fresh ideas.

During the development of Kamiya, and indeed all the employees of Capcom, they realized that they had gone too far from the canons of Resident Evil, and it was decided that the project should become independent. After the change in concept, the game was named . Thus, Devil May Cry and Resident Evil have much more common ground than it might seem at first glance.

The main idea was to make an action movie. Not a psychological thriller, not a horror, but an exciting thriller. Therefore, the project manager decided to make the locations three-dimensional, and the camera dynamic so that it was focused on the main character. Kamiya "borrowed" some key gameplay elements from another game in development at Capcom. We are talking about .

During the test run of Warlords, Kamiya discovered a bug - enemies would not fall to the ground if they were thrown into the air with one blow and they could continue to be hit. The director of DMC liked this moment so much that he decided to make it part of the combat system of his game. In the future, the bug will be called "juggle" (from the English word "juggle"). You may have heard of this popular technique from the world of fighting games.

The background of the entire series is as follows: the demon Sparda turned against the lord of the underworld Mundus when he fell in love with an earthly girl. Having sealed the world of demons with the help of an amulet and his sword, he divided the amulet into two parts, which later went to his sons - Dante and Virgil. The one who connects the amulet together will receive the power of Sparda. Actually, this is the main plot of the plot of the entire series.

Devil May Cry

Dante is the main protagonist of Devil May Cry. One fine day, the mysterious girl Trish comes to him with the clear intent to kill. Dante, of course, is too tough for her. The girl flees in a hurry, but reports that Mundus has returned and is on a remote island. The protagonist travels to the island and discovers demons and Mundus' henchmen. There he meets Vergil in the demonic form of Nelo Angelo, enslaved by the villain, and receives his part of the amulet. Trish turns out to be a servant of the lord of the underworld, but because of Dante she decides to turn her back on Mundus. Together they defeat the villain. What happened to Verlig after the defeat is one of the main mysteries that has been haunting the minds of fans for a long time.

The first part of Devil May Cry was rated extremely positively, mainly due to the stylish and dynamic gameplay. Some still consider her the best in the entire series, especially in terms of location design.

Devil May Cry 2

Received low ratings from players and critics. Much of this was due to Capcom's business strategy. Kamiya didn't play the game. The development process was extremely difficult. According to official data, the director was Hideaki Itsuno, who had not previously dealt with such things. Itsuno started working on the project when 4 months were left before the release and it is still unknown who was the game designer of DMC 2 during the main development period.

The plot of the second part is interesting because in the finale Dante went to conquer hell. Long before this, the hero meets a girl named Lucia, who asks for help to defeat a businessman named Arius. The villain wants to conquer the world with the help of demonic power. However, Lucia herself turns out to be an artificial being created by Arius. After defeating him, the girl asks Dante to kill her, but they are interrupted by the suddenly opened gates to hell. Dante decides to close them from the inside. As a result, he is forced to stay there until he finds his way back.

In the final scene, we see Lucia waiting for the return of the hero. Hearing the roar of the engine, the girl runs outside, waiting to meet Dante. But the player will not be shown who arrived.

In DMC 2, players scolded almost everything. Virgil is gone, no one else remembers the female secondary character. The villain is boring, Dante is too gloomy, the combat system is oversaturated with absolutely unnecessary tinsel. Of the positive aspects, only the increased scale of the action was noted. But this was not enough.

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening

is one of the most successful parts of the series. She was already completely entrusted to Hideaki Itsuno. He decided to return to the roots, forget about the second part and improve everything that was in the first. The complexity was increased, and the combat system was brought to mind. But most often the game is remembered for the insane production of plot scenes in which Dante, to the accompaniment of demonic rock, rides enemies like a skateboard and runs them over with a motorcycle.

Plot DMC 3 is a prequel to the entire series. Brother Dante sought to master the power of his father and open a portal to the world of demons with the help of the ancient tower Temen-ni-gru. To this end, he teamed up with a certain Arkham, who told Dante about Virgil's plans. By manipulating the brothers, Arkham wanted to gain the power of their father, the demon Sparda.

In addition to the video game series, there is an anime series of the same name. The action takes place between the first and fourth parts and tells about the everyday work of the Devil May Cry agency.

During the passage, Dante meets the Lady, the daughter of Arkham, who seeks to wipe her father from the face of the earth for killing her mother. And later, Virgil himself realizes that he was just a puppet and also joins the hero.

Dante and Virgil manage to defeat Arkham, who was unable to control Sparda's power. After defeating a common enemy, the brothers are already fighting with each other, and Dante is stronger. Virgil decides to stay in hell and ends up in the very depths. Weakened from his fight with Dante, but retaining his part of the amulet, he encounters Mundus in Hell. As we know from the first part, Virgil could not cope with the ruler of hell and was enslaved.

Dante, along with the Lady, opens an office called Devil May Cry.

Dante's Awakening is an icon of the genre. It had everything for which it is customary to love slashers. A whirlwind combat system, enchanting bosses, a combination of melee and ranged weapons and an original soundtrack later released separately. Starting from scratch, Itsuno did everything right.

Devil May Cry 4

The plot takes place after the events of the very first part. Trish and Lady, along with Dante, run a business and kill demons on order. The protagonist of this part is a certain Nero - a pupil of the Order of the Sword, which consists of knights who worship Sparda and use the power of angels to fight demons. But in reality, it turns out that their power is of demonic origin.

Realizing how far this can go, Dante, Trish and the Lady work to put an end to the order. It all starts with an opening scene in which Dante breaks into the holy of holies of the order and kills its leader Sanctus. After that, the player, controlling Nero, will have to fight the main character of all the previous parts. Great move by the writers. Dante escapes, and the new protagonist begins the pursuit.

In the course of the story, Nero comes to realize what is happening. And he himself understands how dangerous the flirtation of the order with demonic forces was and unites with Dante. He later obtains Vergil's sword called Yamato, which allows him to open the gates to Hell. The heroes manage to defeat Sanctus, who survived Dante's attack and merged with a huge statue of Sparda.

The game does not explicitly state that Nero is the son of Virgil and the grandson of Sparda. Also in the fourth part, a new female character, Kyrie, is introduced. She is the Order's opera singer and Nero's love interest.

The PS4 and Xbox One re-release features a separate campaign for Virgil. The time frame is before the events of DMC 3. Players have noticed that Virgil's demonic form, Nelo Angelo, is a direct reference to the protagonist of the fourth part. When translated from Japanese, the letters "R" and "L" are interchangeable, so we can assume that we immediately dealt with Nero Angelo, which is translated from Italian as "black angel". And Italian is not without reason - DMC has become the most frivolous adaptation of Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy".

DMC 4 was received warmly, but without much enthusiasm. Nero, the new protagonist, turned out to be very good in terms of gameplay, but the fans wanted more episodes for Dante. Capcom promised to dedicate exactly half of the game to his adventures, but in fact, gamers received only a third. As a result, sales were low, and Devil May Cry had to be forgotten for a while.

DmC Devil May Cry

In 2013, Capcom relaunched the series with the . The project was developed by Ninja Theory (and). The announcement of the game caused a lot of dissatisfaction due to the updated look of Dante. This was not an ash-haired uncontrollably tough hero, but a brunette and a teenager who had just discovered his strength.

Mundus became the main villain again, but in DmC he, under the guise of an ordinary person, tried to gain complete control over the city of Limbo City. Dante, like Virgil, is a half-demon, half-angel in human form, the so-called Nephilim. As planned by Ninja Theory, the heroes, unlike the Capcom canon, fight against the demons together and generally have similar views.

But after the joint victory over Mundus, Virgil himself wanted to rule humanity. Dante, of course, was stronger. Only at the very end, Ninja Theory hinted that a demonic entity could wake up in the main character.

The game received positive reviews. The British studio knows how to make slashers, and DmC was no exception. The game had its own style, interesting bosses. However, sales were not as high as Capcom had hoped, and we will most likely never see a continuation of this story.

Devil May Cry 5

Developed by Hideaki Itsuno. Let's see what we saw in the trailer from E3 2018.

The game takes place a few years after the end of the fourth part. The debut trailer shows Nero working for his own demon slaying agency. With the canonical name Devil May Cry. The hero does not have a demonic hand, as well as the Yamato sword. All attention is riveted on the third playable character, who just deprived Nero of his right hand.

The new character's name is V, and his main feature is the summoning of assistant demons. Hideaki Itsuno has already hinted that the clue to V's identity is in the Devil Trigger music video that plays in the DMC 5 trailer.

Fans have already found images of a woman and her child, as well as a barely noticeable inscription "I have no name". This is exactly what the Lady said when Dante asked her name in the third part. All this suggests that V is somehow related to the Lady. Perhaps he is her son. But the letter V directly hints that Virgil is also related to this mysterious character.

The main theme in Devil Trigger's lyrics is the demon's desire to get rid of his body. Let's make the main assumption: Vergil is in the body of the Lady's son and deprived Nero of his hand in order to return his sword. Yes, he crippled his son, but Virgil was never distinguished by a desire to take care of others.

The skinny guy, in a dirty T-shirt, looks like a typical American teenager who hangs out in nightclubs and uses drugs, and his name is ... Dante. Yes, the same Dante, the son of the demon Sparda, the legendary demon hunter, who more than once saved the world from being enslaved by demons. Why did he go all out? In fact, he didn't go anywhere, it's just an alternate history Devil May Cry in the British version Ninja Theory, it would seem, the company with the speaking name "Ninja", and in the game there is not even a small fraction of what is in the well-known Japanese franchises. But, that's the reality. Old new hero. Old new story.

Such an addict could be Dante in the final version of the game, fortunately, he was brought to a more sober look.

New DmC very clearly demonstrates the problems of modern society, and in particular this applies to the youth that has blossomed recently, a vivid example of which is our main character. Leading a dissolute lifestyle, drinking in nightclubs and visiting strip bars, the hero wakes up at one fine moment and unexpectedly accepts the burden of the savior of the world. Having learned from a girl named Kat that there is local resistance in the city, he curiously agrees to meet with its leader, who turns out to be his twin brother, Virgil. Virgil reveals to Dante the whole truth about his childhood and family, and also tells that the two of them are destined to stop the evil in the person of the Demon lord - Mundus, who in a new way Ninja Theory is the head of some powerful corporation, well, in order to comply with modern canons. An uncomplicated story that manages to arouse interest even in a fan of the old series.

The original story has undergone many changes, such as Dante's mother, Eve, being killed by Mundus rather than being sacrificed by Sparda himself as in the original story.

To be honest, I was, if not in * obscene word *, then in extreme bewilderment for sure - why capcom suddenly decided to take a chance and give her famous franchise to British amateurs who do not understand anything about Japanese slashers? For the life of me, I still don't understand it. Devil May Cry 3- returned Capcom to its former peak of glory, Devil May Cry 4- sold quite well and brought the company a good profit, and the fans continue their favorite story. So why did you need to change something, and even so dramatically? The original story is still not complete, there are many different intrigues that have not been revealed. But what's done is done. And Ninja Theory completely got rid of everything that was in the Japanese game: Dante changed his hair color, hairstyle and radically changed his lifestyle, and was also significantly deprived of a sense of humor, he does not have life values as such, but they appear during the plot; there was nothing left of Virgil's megalomania but the desire to reunite with his brother in order to eradicate evil, which, well, does not look like him at all; nothing remains of the former gothic and gloomy environment, except for a drug addicted alternative reality called "Limbo".

Ninja Theory did not fail to play a prank on the original, in one episode: when Dante suddenly appears in a white wig, he will say: "What an ugliness? Never."

And now, let's put aside all these fan nitpicking and analyze the game as such. If you do not take into account the story, the game turned out to be what we need in terms of gameplay. The British used the mouse in control! (Oh gods, why didn’t Capcom think of this before?), Which is undoubtedly a plus for PC gamers, because remember what the past parts were scolded for ... So, it’s easier and more convenient to perform combos, but unfortunately, nothing from the old styles not left, but the so-called abilities of an angel and a demon appeared (Since Dante is a Nephilim, did I forget to specify? Sorry), thanks to which he owns weapons of both sides, which are "activated" in battle by pressing one key - damn convenient and pleasant to play, perfect system, I must say. But to me, as an inveterate player and fan of the series, the game seemed very simple, and all because it lost some of the dynamics of battles, if the previous parts were much more hardcore (DMC 3 is generally a god in this regard), then this game is more likely designed for inexperienced players, than hardened ones.

Many levels in the game look very stylish and modern, after all, the British mentality of the developers leaves its mark.

In general, the style is one of the main features of this series, it was also preserved in the new game, but in a new way: in the environment, society, the protagonist can be traced here this "Britishness", the game was modernized in the European manner, that is, quite to itself the real city in which each of us lives, Ninja Theory they didn’t invent some non-existent worlds, here, just like in everyday life, there are corrupt officials, huge corporations, and a system that strives to enslave society - all aspects of real everyday life are present in the game and add “zest” to the game, or something . Main feature Devil May Cry there was always the presence of a boss at the end of almost every mission, but here there are no more than five of them, which is not enough for 20 chapters, again considering the previous games, and it’s not very interesting to fight them.

Devil May Cry wouldn't be itself if it didn't have a girl who always played the role of that very bright light in the darkness, and the name of this angel is Kat.

DmC: Devil May Cry- truly a very stylish and beautiful game, with an original level design and a perfectly working combat system, perhaps many will think that the blond Dante could have been left, but then the game would not correspond to modern canons, Ninja Theory updated the game to match the fashion. As a fan, I want to say "never trust Japanese franchises to Europeans", but the other side of me: "there is a lot of good in this game and it is definitely worth the time spent on it" - who would you classify yourself as? Everyone decides for himself.

Pros:

  • Stylish trendy youth.
  • Convenient control, now you don't have to beat your head against the keyboard.
  • Reworked combat system.
  • Good soundtrack and graphics.
Minuses:
  • And yet the new Dante is bad, if only because he has lost most of his adult and sophisticated humor.
  • The plot is not as addictive as it used to be.

Dante is a mercenary who has devoted his life to hunting demons, looking for the meaning of life in hunting those who killed his mother and harmed his brother. His father is the legendary dark knight Sparda, a demon who rebelled against the Prince of the Underworld, Mundus, and defeated his army. Dante has supernatural abilities, demonic blood makes him very strong and durable, in addition, Dante can turn into a demon for a short time, losing his human form, but becoming more powerful, which, together with the use of weapons, makes him a very difficult opponent. The character was designed by game developer Hideki Kamiya to fit Devil May Cry's vision of being "cool" and "stylish" as a human being. Dante has been well received by players and is often cited as one of the coolest characters in video games.

Concept

Dante first debuted in the video game Devil May Cry, which was originally a sequel to the Resident Evil series. Dante was a very strong character who fought monsters in a gothic castle. Later this idea was rejected, and instead of Dante, Leon Kennedy returned. The creator of the series, Hideki Kamiya, said that Dante was based on the main character of the Cobra manga. Dante's long red cloak was supposed to demonstrate his showiness, and the refusal to drink and smoke, according to Hideki, symbolized "coolness".

Characteristics

Dante is a half-demon, half-man, son of Sparda and an earthly woman. Being a half-breed, Dante has the ability to be in either of the two worlds. He is muscular, has silver-white hair with long bangs, blue eyes, and usually wears a red leather cloak. Dante's arsenal includes firearms and melee weapons, including two permanent pistols "Ebony" and "Ivory", as well as swords "Rebellion" (Russian. Rebel) and "Force Edge" (Russian. Edge of Strength). He has superhuman strength inherited from his father, which gives him the ability to temporarily turn into a demon. In this state, Dante possesses great strength, high speed, and agility. Dante remains confident when facing any opponents, regardless of their size and strength, and often allows himself to taunt them before the start of the battle.

Dante is very calm and serene all the time. He is always in debt and unable to pay them. His favorite foods are pizza and strawberry ice cream, but he does not like pizza with olives.

Dante in the anime series

The main character of the anime. He has a bad temper, but he is skilled with weapons, which often helps him in difficult situations. Has a peculiar sense of humor. Engaged in hunting for demons that have made their way into the human world. Usually armed with two pistols: "Ebony" (Russian. Black), "Ivory" (rus. White), - and the sword "Rebellion" (Russian. Rebel). In food, he prefers pizza and strawberry dessert. Extremely unlucky at gambling, constantly losing to Lady and Patty.
