The Season Journey is a list of achievements conveniently organized into chapters that guides the player when starting the game with nothing, from scratch - and rewards him for progress. This is a relatively new feature that provides an alternative to storming the Greater Rifts, and is aimed at the player's personal advancement.

The most important innovation now is the ability to get an additional chest tab for completing the penultimate chapter of the campaign, "Conqueror". Of course, different people have different opinions on exactly how these new chest tabs should be made available, or awarded as achievements in the game. Blizzard is monitoring feedback:

We want to ensure that players can get more chest space. We use the seasonal hike as a way for players to get this location. It provides a reason to participate in the season, especially if you haven't thought about it before. So, starting with Season 5, and in future seasons, players will be able to get additional tabs in the chest by completing the Conqueror stage in the Season Journey; The 6th tab of the chest can also be immediately purchased with gold by all players.

Another new gift for seasonal heroes is Hedrig's Gift. When you reach a certain goal at the beginning of the Season Journey, you will receive powerful set items for level 70 heroes as a gift from the blacksmith. This is a bag, like for completing Tyrael's tasks - but it comes to the in-game mail (if there is anything in the mailbox, its icon appears in the lower left corner, next to the chat).

The contents of Hedrig's Gift depend on the class of the hero who unlocked it. It will also vary from season to season. Now it will be:

  • Barbarian: Might of the Earth set.
  • Crusader: Summoner's Thorns Set.
  • Demon Hunter: Shadow Robe Set.
  • Monk: The Outfit of the Monkey King.
  • Sorcerer: Jade Reaper's Robes set.
  • Wizard: Firebird Attire set.

Next, the usual cosmetic rewards await us: a pet, transmogrification into the conqueror's armor, and portrait frames. The current pet is a wicker man, in the theme of a new area in the game - Grey Island. Also, all decorative pets have become useful - starting with this patch 2.4, they can pick up gold for the hero. With the introduction of new sets and the reworking of old ones, with the advent of fresh legendary properties of things, and the ability to upgrade them with a new recipe in the Kanai cube, the power of the players has clearly grown. Therefore, the season 5 journey reflects this: the requirements are raised by 5-10 levels of the great portal; for some trials - one or two difficulty levels (instead of Torment 6, for example - Torment 7).

Removed counters for extracting properties to Kanai's Cube, which was a hot item that season. The current gameplay innovations are class dungeons, they also appeared in the campaign. But not excessive: only one task for the normal passage, and one for the master. There are more quests to quickly kill bosses.

Towards the unknown

Nephalem Rifts are areas of another reality, where a randomly generated territory is inhabited by the most unpredictable combinations of opponents. In the portals you may come across, allowing you to enhance the skills of your characters so much that no one can resist you. After defeating enough monsters, you will be able to fight the Portal Guardian, a unique boss with a random set of terrifying skills that guards amazing treasures. You can get into the portals in adventure mode - for this you just need to use the Nephalem obelisk in any city. A special menu will appear on the screen, which will allow you to open either a Nephalem or a greater portal. You can open Nephalem Rifts as much as you want, but to get into the Greater Rift, you need a special key (obtained by defeating the Nephalem Portal Guardian).

Great Portals

Opening a Nephalem Portal

If you defeat a Nephalem Rift Guardian, he will drop a Greater Portal Key (or two or three at a time on higher difficulty levels). With this key, while at the Nephalem Obelisk, you will be able to open a great portal and select its level. At first, you will only have access to a few levels of the Greater Rifts, but once you pass them, you will be able to progress to higher levels. When playing cooperatively, your companions will need to use their own Greater Portal Keys to join you. Greater Portal Guardians enter combat when you've defeated enough common monsters. However, this is where the similarities between great and Nephalem portals end.

  • In the great portals, the number of difficulty levels is unlimited, and each is more difficult than the previous one. To reach the next level, you need to summon and destroy the guardian of the portal within a certain time.
  • In the great portal, until it is completed, you cannot change skills or equipment.
  • If you miss the deadline, you will still be able to continue clearing the portal, but you will not be able to advance to the next level or upgrade legendary gems.
  • Your record for the difficulty level and speed of passing the great portals is located in .
  • Monsters in Greater Rifts (except Guardians) do not drop loot, so your only job is to kill as many of them as quickly as possible.
  • Guardians in Greater Rifts can drop Legendary Gems.
  • You will not be able to teleport to players in the Greater Rift if you have not yet unlocked the Greater Rift with a Key in Multiplayer.
  • If you clear the Greater Rift much faster than required, you will be able to enter the portal several levels higher at once.

Developing Legendary Gems in Greater Rifts

Ursha's Ancient Nephalem Spirit appears when you kill the Greater Rift Guardian within the time limit. It gives Glorious Warriors the ability to upgrade Legendary gems.

In high-level Great Rifts, you will have more attempts to upgrade legendary-quality gems. In addition, at the Nephalem Obelisk, you will be able to open an improved Greater Rift for a certain amount of gold and get an additional attempt to upgrade the legendary gem if you successfully complete it. Not all of Ursha's attempts to improve your Legendary Jewel are necessarily successful, so you may have to go through a lot of Greater Rifts before you achieve the desired result.

Legendary Gems

If you find a legendary gem and select it, you will see a number below its name indicating its value. Each time you summon Urshi (when you complete a Greater Rift within the allotted time), it gives you an opportunity to increase the gem's value. And the higher the value, the more additional qualities a gem acquires if it is inserted into a frame.

What are set dungeons?

Senior game designer Alex Salman, who is leading the development of this aspect of the game, said that the gameplay in the set dungeons will be significantly different from the usual. “This is an opportunity to evaluate your skills. So why add a new element to the game that is so different from the existing ones? Some players want to complete specific tasks with clear conditions. Just like seasonal quests, set dungeons provide players with goals that can be achieved. To collect a complete set of items, you need to make an effort, but such achievements have not yet been noted in any way. Therefore, complete dungeons will be the logical conclusion of a series of tests.

In addition, set dungeons are another competitive element of the game, although here the progress of the players will not be recorded in the same detail as in the leaderboards. Completed dungeons have a limited time limit, so players can always try to beat their own record or compare with friends to see who's been the most successful.

We intentionally didn't introduce leaderboards for set dungeons for a number of reasons. In particular, it would seriously slow down the development process. In addition, this way we can avoid a situation where the players who look at the results presented in the table lose the desire to continue to fight for their positions. So we've decided to limit competition between friends or within clans to make new dungeons more accessible. Competing with the best players in the world is an almost impossible task, but breaking the records of your friends is a completely different matter.

Where did the idea of ​​set dungeons come from?

What was presented in the preliminary version of the project is now almost completely embodied in the game. This is the final milestone for players who have collected full sets of items. Delsir's Masterpiece is the first set with which a special dungeon was designed. It made a huge impression on the whole team. The developers wanted to create even more difficult tests, which could only be overcome at the limit of possibilities. It remained to solve some technical issues, but in general the team was ready to implement a new idea in the game.

Sequential development: design subtleties

There was no need to change the original idea. “I thought about it for a very long time,” says Alex, explaining that the idea was successful from the very beginning. But even with the implementation of a successful idea, unforeseen difficulties often arise.

The hardest part was adapting set dungeons to multiplayer. It was originally planned that these would be trials only for a single passage. But still, the network game is an important element of Diablo III, so such restrictions seemed unacceptable to the developers.


In Diablo, it should always be possible to play with friends, no matter what you want to do in the game at the moment.

During the development process, designers not only think about how good a particular feature is in itself, but also compare their options in the PC and console versions of the game. When we looked at the set dungeons from the point of view of a player using the console, we sometimes encountered a situation where players had to make unequal efforts when passing together: someone, imposingly lounging on the couch, was distracted and read messages on a smartphone, and someone I tried my best to overcome the challenge. Situations like this ruin the fun of the game, so we had to come up with a solution.

“At first I thought that nothing would work out, but my colleagues were able to help me realize this idea,” Alex admits. Together, the developers solved many technically complex issues, for example, made it possible to simultaneously complete several dungeons and worked out interface features for such cases.

Of course, this approach raised certain questions among both developers and players. Does co-op mean that set dungeons need to be cleared this way? By no means! Players will be able to clear each of the dungeons the way they like best. Someone likes to figure things out on their own, rely on their own strengths and enjoy personal successes and achievements. Others do not shun the help of friends. In the end, each player will make a choice for himself - depending on his favorite style of play.

Advantages and disadvantages: different kits, different stories

As is often the case, it was not without its pitfalls. Some of the kits and challenges were pretty easy to come up with, while others were a bit of a puzzle. There are many reasons for that.

For example, just at the time when Alex was working on the concept of set dungeons, work was actively going on to change the Summoner's Thorns set. This was done by the senior technical designer of the game, Wyatt Cheng, who came to the aid of Alex. He helped determine what challenges players should be faced with and tie them in with the features and style of the new set properties.

On the other hand, the dungeons for the barbarian sets turned out as if by themselves. One of the best examples of this idea was the Wrath of the Wastes dungeon, but not at all because it is considered difficult. Its tests perfectly reflect the features of the kit, which is what the developers were trying to achieve. In this dungeon, you need to skillfully use controls and the Whirlwind skill to avoid enemy attacks and deal damage. So players will get a lot of new experiences and enjoy a special style of play. The developers tried to follow a similar approach when creating other dungeons.

While the development process wasn't as smooth in all cases, we didn't want to make too many changes to the game. For example, some tasks in co-op become too easy, and we would like to fix this, but on the other hand, it is necessary to limit the range of elements that will undergo changes after the appearance in the game. We are trying to avoid changes that would make players feel like their progress and achievements are less meaningful.

While testing new features on the PTR, Alex read player feedback daily. “I was more interested in the various offers, but I also looked at the general feedback and found out what the players liked and what they didn’t,” Alex said, noting that he was very pleased with the reaction of the players. - “In general, I was counting on just such reviews. The new content interested the players and became a worthy challenge.”
