Rules of the game invincible knight. Rival Knights for iPad

Rival Knights appeared in the App Store about a month ago. Its developer is the well-known Gameloft studio. The game is an arcade simulator of jousting tournaments. Our ward, chained in armor, receives his first faithful horse and goes to the lists. Then, knocking out more and more rivals from the saddle, he updates his ammunition wardrobe and changes to a faster mount. We want to tell you about how to do it most effectively.

Protection first!
As you know, success in each of the collisions on the lists directly depends on your advantage in at least two of the three characteristics: defense, speed and impact power. The first of these characteristics is completely passive - during the battles it cannot be influenced in any way. This means that the most money you need to invest in armor upgrades, because thanks to this you will have a permanent advantage in one of three aspects. Then you can pump the horse, and the spear - last.

The lighter the better!
Each of the elements of equipment (helmet, armor, spear) should be changed to the lightest sample as soon as possible and then improved. The fact is that many horses simply cannot carry too much load due to restrictions. Yes, and there is no particular need to buy the most expensive ammunition. At least until you get the most heavy-lifting black horse (sold for premium currency!).

"Great start" - half the victory!
Try to always start the fight with a "great start" - be in time at the last second before the signal tap on the screen. Your horse will rear up and get a very good bonus to speed when it rushes towards the enemy. Learning to almost always get a "great start" is not so difficult - just silently count to three after pressing the "Play" button and immediately tap the screen. On this, perhaps, everything. We've listed the three most essential rules for playing Rival Knights successfully. See you at the rally!

Rival Knights, which for some reason in the domestic App Store are called " invincible knight", claim the laurels of a kind of jousting simulator and have already received approval in the form of an "Editor's Choice" apple store. A preliminary look really promises us a juicy picture and interesting gameplay, and the “free” label makes you press the install button without any hesitation. How right the editors of the application store are and whether microtransactions (for free) will actively put sticks in the hooves of the wheel, we will find out in today's review.

No, we still cannot understand how the words “rival” and “knights” confused the “Invincible Knight”, for the life of me. Apparently, it is necessary to adapt the posters of a good hundred Hollywood films into Russian in order to understand such subtleties of the transformation of phrases. But there is nowhere to go, because we live under the “ru” section in iTunes and we will be content with “our” interpretation. So, the "Invincible Knight" is ready to pass the test of strength.

Fans of the Middle Ages, King Arthur, Merlin and just horsemen chopping each other with long spears at full speed have been waiting for such a game for a long time. Waiting times helped brighten up things like Shake Spears!, but the local warriors did not know how to turn their left cheek to the player and fought only in 2D mode. It was interesting, addictive, however, the so-called "wow-effect (sorry for the slang)" made itself felt only after the launch of the "Invincible Knight".

What's the secret? And look at the picture! The graphic component is simply amazing! Any Pentium III-based system unit would have convulsed and let out a heart-rending cry, trying to work out such a picture. The first Infinity Blade proved that the Unreal Engine can also be developed on tablets, and Rival Knights (or the "Invincible Knight", if it's not good) brought its portion of diversity to the meaningless one-button hack, although, to be honest, he didn't go far :)

Models of horses, weapons, backgrounds, animations, speed effects, armor shine and flying chips from crushed spears are very colorful. If we concentrate on the duel itself, then it is very colorful, the exit of the rivals is staged in detail, the horizon is covered by the walls of the fortress, and in parallel with the rushing skanoon, rows of tents with attendants are rushing by. The only problem is that the background does not change and time after time, battle after battle, the atmosphere is created by stone buildings. But the time of day and the weather are updated, giving the right to impale enemies under the cover of darkness and in wet armor. Maybe in the future the developers will provide the game with green meadows, a variety of castles, throne rooms, finally.

Visually, we made sure that the image on the screen is worthy of praise and now it is worth talking directly about the gameplay, because good old tediousness can be hidden behind a beautiful wrapper. If we try to instill a genre in our invincible knight, we get something like Action/RPG. A tournament duel is responsible for the Action part. At first, you don’t get hung up on equipment, improvements, your own symbols at all. Just focus on the fight and that's it.

For successful combat, you need to remember only a couple of truths. First, adjust to the countdown to the start, in order to put the horse on its hind legs and add acceleration by clicking on the screen at the right time. This, by the way, will be encouraged by additional coins. As soon as the stallion rushed off, it is necessary to “throw firewood into the firebox”, again with single clicks on the tablet, when the arrow is above the green mark. The further, the faster and the more difficult it will be to catch the moment. The horse races, the opponent approaches, the spear comes to the ready, the camera slows down, marking the right point on the hostile knight, along which you need to move as accurately as possible. This is precisely the essence of the game. An extra millimeter to the side - and you are already flying away from the saddle. It is necessary to adapt to the speed, to the protection of the enemy, and it is desirable to have non-shaking hands in order to successfully beat competitors.

Basically, the whole process is controlled by a couple of taps on the screen, but it adds a lot of adrenaline and makes you want to binge through the entire campaign, which has the length of Santa Barbara. Here we gradually approach the RPG part. For certain battles, you will be given bonuses: improved protection, a bonus to speed, replenishment of seals. The latter are red and blue and serve as a pass to subsequent skirmishes. It is on them that the developers are trying to cut down real money, because in the knight's wallet you can store only 6 seals, which will take 4 minutes and will be restored 5 times longer. Along the way, you can go through rating battles using already blue seals, but the story of squandering will be repeated.

If you decide to spend real money, then you should familiarize yourself with the prices, which are by no means budgetary here.

Even gold is not as important as seals or diamonds. Jewels are a separate type of funds for purchasing equipment and access to the Tournament of the Chosen. They are highly valued and sometimes you have to hang in your head whether to spend 5000 gold or 40 diamonds. As in poker, no one will accrue gold per day, unlike stamps. On the one hand, the game gives you time to take a break and brew a mug of chicken broth until the red stamps are restored, but on the other hand, you want to beat your enemies without interrupting for any pauses!

In fact, "The Invincible Knight" creates that same medieval warlike atmosphere in which you want to change the types of armor, spears, improve them, measure the load on the horse, hope that in the next battle you will get free bonuses for attacking or accelerating the horse. And in the midst of this splendor it is stupid to sit and wait - not a fountain. Especially when you participate in tournaments for blue seals with real opponents - the excitement heats up to critical levels!

It seems that the guys from Gameloft have the slogan "Time is money!" hangs even in the restroom, because for the improvement of uniforms and the replenishment of seals they make you wait a long time, or go into your wallet to buy expensive diamonds. In any Action/RPG for PC, you go to a blacksmith, pay local gold, and get an upgraded blade instantly, while Rival Knights starts a timer, and underneath it, an alternative pay-and-robbery option.

Too ardent greed does not have a very nice effect on the final score for the game. It's a shame that it turned out to be a very high-quality game both in terms of graphics and gameplay, albeit not very intricate, which is strangled by the financial clamp of expectation. Even for 169 rubles, many would download this application to their devices, but pay the same amount each time for the sake of another frill, which will have to be changed in an hour ... You will get by with the 7th, gentlemen.

The theme of chivalry excites many players and pushes developers to bold experiments. Spectacular tournaments where the winner takes it all, and the loser wallows in the mud, escaping with bruises at best. All this has its own romance, which has been tried to be conveyed in more than one game. The latest and most recent example. However, attentive readers who read the review at one time or played the game itself will immediately name several critical shortcomings. Today we will talk about the game on exactly the same topic - Rival Knights from Gameloft. In this case, the game does not have the flaws that prevented Joust Legend from becoming a hit.

To begin with, we note that Rival Knights is distributed free of charge. This, of course, is a big plus for many players who do not buy games at all, but knowing Gameloft and the general trends in the field of free-to-play games, you should not rejoice too much. After starting, players are greeted with a short story introduction, which explains who and why will fight in the game. Not to say that there is a need for a plot, but it's nice that the developers have thought through this component as well, and also created very colorful characters.

Let's not put off the matter indefinitely and go to the lists, where for the first time we will meet in a fight with another knight. Any duel consists of three stages important for the final result: start, run-up and strike. It all starts with a countdown and when it reaches one, you need to have time to tap on the screen exactly at a certain moment in order to get the best start, immediately getting a good increase in speed. Then the horse picks up the move, and the player must have time to touch the screen when the indicator is in the area of yellow, and even better green division. Each such "hit" will add quite real numbers to the speed.

Finally, it comes to meeting with another knight in the center of the stadium. Time slows down, and the player is given the opportunity to aim at the point selected by the game. This is supposedly a weak spot in the defense of the enemy knight. This is done with the help of gestures in the appropriate directions. Closer to the target, the sight changes its color from yellow to green, but it should be borne in mind that the spear can move to the side in these couple of seconds, so you should be ready to correct it for a strike. The one who coped best with the three listed elements often remains in the saddle, and the loser effectively flies into the mud.

However, the further the player advances, the more he will be surprised at the ease with which his opponents send him into the same mud, and the naughty spear takes him away from the target just before the blow. It turns out that Rival Knights has another important component for victory - characteristics. Each character has three of them: defense, speed and impact strength. And if the defense indicator is unchanged after the start of the fight, then the speed and strength of the blow depend on the successful actions described above. Thus, the knight who will be stronger in two of the three indicators will become the winner in one particular duel.

Characteristics improve between participation in tournaments. For the accumulated coins, existing items are improved or new ones are purchased. For every knight, a helmet, armor, spear and horse are important. These four areas can be improved. However, the coins for this business are sorely lacking. In addition, the free Rival Knights resulted in the appearance of the so-called royal seals for participating in tournaments. If they run out, then take a break in the game or replenish their stock with diamonds. This is another currency that is spent on unique items or speeding up various actions, such as upgrades.

But the fun doesn't end there. Rival Knights has something that Joust Legend didn't have. Multiplayer. Having dealt with the first serious opponent in the campaign, you can proceed to online tournaments, where the game independently forms the lists of participants, conducts a draw. Participation in a network tournament costs a certain amount of diamonds, and the action does not take place in real time, but with a slight delay. For example, you fought with the knight of another player and defeated him, showing a certain result. Then the other player has 24 hours to answer you and have the exact same duel on their side. Whose results in the end will be better - he won. Given the difference in skills and dynamic gameplay that not every mobile Internet will pull out, such a system seems fair.

Something, but the graphics in games about knightly tournaments, the developers make a feast for the eyes. Rival Knights looks great, even better than Joust Legend. Excellent detail, solid animation and reliable physics, together they give an amazing effect. Add to this the change of day and night, as well as the ability to view any item of equipment in detail in the store - the artists did their best. The sound is somewhat lost against the background of such cool graphics, but it is quite appropriate within the framework of the game. I don't want to turn it off.

The result is very interesting. For starters, it's important to note that Rival Knights is a fairly simple game. It takes only a few minutes to get used to the controls, while in Joust Legend it was one of the most difficult tasks. The gameplay is also simplified as much as possible for the widest audience. It is important that at the same time he did not become less interesting. The duels are fast, spectacular and even fun until the seals run out and you have to wait for them to be restored. It would seem that at this time you can be distracted by multiplayer, but here, after one duel, you can wait up to a day to continue participating. So in the end, the brisk pace slips into the painful expectation of the next game, and this is not very good. Otherwise, Gameloft turned out to be an excellent game about a jousting tournament. Not a simulator, but a great arcade game.

Knightly tournaments... Their history began in the 11th century in France. For medieval Europe, each of the competitions of noble cavalrymen was an event comparable in significance and entertainment to the modern Olympic Games (which, as you know, no one remembered until the 19th century). Tournaments have always been timed to coincide with some pleasant events in the life of high society: the wedding of a prince, the birth of a king's granddaughter, the conclusion of peace with a neighboring kingdom, etc. Unfortunately, six centuries later, in the 17th century, knightly cavalry was completely supplanted by much more effective rifle infantry and the grandiose tradition gradually faded away. However, wait to be sad! After all, some more than three centuries passed and the iPad was invented, and more recently, Gameloft released a game called (Rival Knights). Now every owner of an apple gadget can feel like a real participant in the tournament!

After the introduction, it is usually customary to talk about the plot, but ... it is practically absent here. Yes, he is not needed! There are only a couple of things you need to know about all this. There are five clans with poetic names (in order of influence): the Order of the Rose, the Order of the Wind, the Order of the Falcon, the Order of the Griffin and the Order of the Dragon. At the head of each of these orders is the main feudal lord, and several smaller lords "walk" under him. We have to overcome all these blue-blooded persons in tournaments in order to become the champion of the whole kingdom.

Each of the small feudal lords is a "mini-boss" that you need to get to by overcoming a series of battles with ordinary knights and many different challenges. To participate in one of the battles of the main campaign, one red seal out of six possible is required (these resources accumulate over time, and are also bought for real money). Some of the tests set the conditions necessary for victory: smash a wooden spear against the enemy (into chips!) At the highest possible speed, deliver the most accurate blow to the weak spot of other people's armor, or even make the horse rear up before launching into a frenzied ride .. Battles with lords essentially differ only in additional bonuses upon victory (a handful of gems traditional for F2P, a piece of armor and other "goodies"), and a couple of funny remarks before the start of the fight itself.

Now let's move on to the most "delicious" - to tournament battles. Everything here is ingeniously simple and spectacular at the same time. First, the opponents stand at opposite ends of the stadium, a barrier runs along its center, and each of the knights must stand so that the partition is to his left. Then a three-second countdown begins, and if you tap the screen at the last second, the player's horse will rear up and rush forward with a small bonus to speed. While the opponents converge, you should spur the horse at the right time with the same taps. The closest analogy is the manual shifting of gears in a sports car during a race. When the knights approach each other at a distance of a spear, time slows down and we need to carefully aim in a few seconds as accurately as possible at the opponent's weak spot. The latter is complicated by the fact that the horsemen, albeit slowly, but continue to move and the sight is inexorably shifting. As soon as one of the knights is thrown to the ground, the battle ends.

The whole mechanics of fights is based on three "pillars": "defense", "speed" and "impact force". To win, it is enough to have an advantage in any two of these three characteristics at the same time. If we manage to outperform the opponent in all three directions, then it will be especially painful for him to fall after soaring into the air to the accompaniment of a gasping crowd of onlookers. Often, this ends in a knockout and we are given a reward in the form of an additional little gold. However, if the stats are the same, then a draw can happen - the knights will hit each other, beautifully lean to the side and stand at opposite ends to start again.

To make it clearer how it all works, let's talk about the mechanics in more detail. The level of our protection directly depends on the quality of the armor. We (along with helmets, spears and horses) can buy them in between battles in the in-game store. The limit of our speed while running towards the enemy depends on the capabilities of the acquired horse. And here is the maximum possible impact force from the “lethality” of the spear. All of the above tournament attributes must be changed to more powerful ones, having accumulated enough prize coins. Some particularly effective exhibits can only be bought for gems (which, with direct hands, can be obtained without investing real currency).

Among other things, the "Invincible Knight" has a network mode. But it is made on the mechanics of "deferred multiplayer". Once a day, an online tournament is announced in the form of an event with some pretty name (“Royal Fair”, “Lion Festival”). In fact, the players are waiting for the same fights, but with real players and very nice prizes and incentives for participating. For each victory, from 10 to 40 fame points are awarded (depending on the complexity of the battle and the skill of the player), and only 5 is given for a loss. Seals are also needed to participate in battles, but this time in blue. It turns out that when we lose, we practically waste one of the precious seals - in the overall ranking of fame points, 5 points of fame do not make the difference. All fights here, as already mentioned, take place in the delayed multiplayer mode, which means that in fact the characteristics of the heroes of different players compete, and not the players themselves in real time. In battle, we are still opposed by artificial intelligence, but with a leveling previously set by the living owner of this character.

"Invincible Knight" from Gameloft has far from the most polished graphics, lack of variety in battles, but, it is not clear why, it is still very difficult to break away from it. At least to write this review. For a better immersion in the setting, we advise you to first read the story of George Martin called "The Knight of the Hedge".

Pros: Indescribable drive and frantic dynamics of jousting on the lists, historically accurate medieval arsenal, nice graphics and soundtrack, spectacular physics of falling bodies.
Minuses: Despite the rather good detailing of the picture, the models “flaunt” unsmoothed edges, which at first greatly spoils the impression; The knightly duels themselves on the lists do not differ too much from each other, which is partially offset by powerful dynamics and an interesting selection of equipment.
Conclusions: Somewhat controversial, but extremely exciting and spectacular knight tournament simulator. "Invincible Knight" can be recommended to almost any player.
