Review of chess programs. Download chess

Chess is one of the oldest intellectual games, its history goes back over one and a half thousand years. Created in India, they underwent significant changes in the Arab countries, from where they came to Europe and Africa, where they continued to be modified. It wasn't until the 15th century that the game acquired its modern classic look, which was officially standardized in the 19th century.

Learning to play chess is both simple and difficult at the same time. A child can master the basics of the art of chess, since the rules of the game are quite simple. However, learning how to make complex combinations, be able to calculate moves in advance, analyze the behavior of the enemy - all this is much more difficult and comes only with experience. The main rule when teaching chess can be formulated as follows: real mastery comes only when playing with a more experienced opponent. Chess, like any other kind of art (namely art, do not forget about chess composition - drawing up various problems and studies), requires constant improvement of skills and further development.

This is a project for beginners, approved by our readers, in which you or your child can improve the skill of the game, complete a chess rank, and in a short time grow to the prize-winner of regional tournaments. The teachers are FIDE masters, online training.

Lucas Chess Tutorial

In order to practice playing chess, it is better either to play with an experienced opponent who will be able to point out mistakes in time, or to use various programs that simulate a chess game. One of the most common simulators is. Its only drawback is its focus on users who know how to play chess - the player must know the basic rules, as well as the moves of the pieces. Also, weaknesses include a simple interface and uncomplicated visualization of a chess game.

The program contains a rich set of training functions, as well as a wide range of settings. Its advantage is its absolutely free distribution. The user can independently adjust the difficulty of the game (a system of various chess engines of various strengths is used), set limits on the number of prompts given by the coach. At the same time, the program can automatically adapt to the player's abilities: each victory over the computer increases the difficulty, and when the maximum level is reached, a transition to a more complex engine takes place.

The most powerful engines (Rybka and Stockfish) allow you to play at the level of the world's leading chess players. In order to move to a higher difficulty, the player must beat the computer twice on the current one - when playing for white and black pieces, respectively. If you win, the user's rating increases.

The Lucas Chess coach's help is that when playing on a simple chess engine, the system uses a more complex engine to analyze the situation and recommend the most optimal moves. This avoids gross mistakes made by beginners. If the coach sees the optimal move in a given situation, then he provides an assessment of the current move, the opponent's possible reaction to the current move, as well as the move that is optimal according to the coach's algorithm in this situation. To side with the program or to leave everything unchanged is the player's choice. However, playing on the coach's prompts will not work - their number is limited. Each victory also reduces their number, at high levels you have to play independently. Also, in some cases, you can use your own move, instead of the one suggested by the trainer - this is relevant in a situation where the numerical estimate of the move by the algorithm differs slightly from the perfect move. In this case, the number of available prompts does not change, which allows you to save them for more complex situations.

Along with the classic chess game with hints, there are various modes that allow you to hone your playing skills, for example, finding the best move, finding available moves, moving between positions, checkmate in several moves, etc. The users have access to chess problems, teaching positions, as well as playing a regular chess game.

Self-study books

For adherents of traditional approaches to teaching classical chess, there are various books that allow you to comprehend both the basics of chess art and learn complex combinations, learn how to avoid common mistakes, analyze the situation on the board, and much more. Among them, the following editions stand out the most:

1) V.L. Henkin - "Where the King Goes."
The author of the book is the famous chess player and theorist Viktor Khenkin. Despite the fact that the chess tutorial was published back in the 80s of the last century, the book does not lose its relevance to this day. It sets out the main points necessary for a novice chess player: information about the chessboard and notation, pieces and their placement, their value, the rules of castling, mating with various pieces, as well as about the features of the game at various stages - the opening, middlegame and endgame. According to the author, the success of any chess game lies not in memorizing a multitude of opening options, but in the systematic study of the game from the elementary positions of the endgame. A peculiar approach to teaching allows you to master the basics and principles of chess science in the shortest possible time.

2) DI. Bronstein - "Self-instruction manual of the chess game".
The book, written by a famous chess player, allows you to both comprehend the basics of chess art and develop creative thinking. However, against the background of all similar tutorials, this one has a certain specificity - it is not addressed for those who absolutely do not know how to play chess. The student must have basic knowledge - chess notation, general rules of the game and the moves of the pieces. Also, the tutorial considers a chess game as a set of sequential positions that arise after the move of each of the players. This provides a systematic approach to teaching the game. In parallel with this, the author examines the styles of play of the strongest contemporary chess players (the end of the 20th century), their train of thought in various situations, finding original ways in the studied positions, as well as the general place of chess in the modern world.

3) B. Fischer - "Bobby Fischer teaches to play chess."
The self-instruction manual, written by the brilliant American chess player, allows you to quickly, effectively and fun to learn how to play chess without memorizing complex combinations and strategies. With the help of a book, you can learn to play chess well much faster than with the help of textbooks or various lectures. The world bestseller does not have any narrow specialization, but is intended for a wide range of readers, including those students who sit down at the chessboard for the first time. Part of the book is devoted to the analysis of the games of the great grandmaster with comments by another maestro of the chess art - E. Gufeld.

4) G. Ya. Levenfish - "The Book of a Beginner Chess Player".
This is a universally recognized classic, by which thousands of chess players have studied, some of whom have become eminent grandmasters and even world champions. The book contains a detailed guide with theoretical material and practical exercises of varying difficulty, as well as examples of winning games. Thanks to the author's technique, you can master chess vision and memory, as well as learn how to create your own combinations. It is necessary to study the art of chess according to the method of Grigory Levenfish slowly and gradually, from section to section, fully assimilating each passed stage. At the same time, the book is equally well suited both for beginners who are just mastering chess skills, and for professionals who hone their skills. It is easy to find all the necessary information in it, starting with the placement of the pieces and ending with playing the checkmate in 3 moves.

The first chess program appeared in 1974 back in the USSR. It was the well-known "Kaissa". The car was huge and took up almost an entire room. Played "Kaissa" at the level of the second category of the USSR. Of course, after so many years, progress has not stood still, and at the moment there are programs that play by virtue of an international grandmaster. The world champion among cars is now the Rondo program, created in Japan.
In 37 years, countless numbers have been made for both beginners and grandmasters. Whether you are an amateur or a professional player, you will always find the optimal program for you that suits you. There are programs that teach combinational and positional thinking; playing in the opening, endgame and middlegame. Chess programs have become so universal that even a good chess player can hardly beat them, so they began to make the level of difficulty of the game. The maximum difficulty level of the program reaches 3200, while the current world chess champion, Viswanathan Anand, has a rating of 2817.

Good day, dear friend!

Computers have long played stronger than humans. The best chess programs, and even more so, even the strongest chess players cannot directly compete with them on an equal footing.

However, the "iron monster" is not so great and powerful as one might think. Him there are weaknesses and weaknesses ... Which a chess player of any level is simply obliged to take into account.

More on this at the end of the article, but for now let's take a look inside the computer for a second and review the best engines and user interfaces.

What's inside?

A computer program (engine) is a counting unit. He considers, operates with numbers and does not understand at all what chess is .

The program translates chess language into mathematical actions. Adds, subtracts, and compares numbers. At the end of each option, he gives a numerical grade.

This is how chess engines work.

Engines

Competitions are also held between engines, consisting of a large number of games, much larger than between humans. Based on the results, rating lists are drawn up.

Engine rating 2016

Komodo

Komodo is ranked first in most rankings. Interestingly, the komodo is different in its brains from most of its brethren.

He has learned to evaluate the position better and relies more on evaluation and less on the depth of calculation.

Perhaps this is the secret. The engine combines the best qualities of man and machine. However, these are my suggestions, which, of course, are not the ultimate truth

The latest commercial version of the engine is 11.2 ... Komodo 9 and older versions are offered for free distribution.

You can download it at main portal of the publisher

Stockfish

This is the logo. In translation, stockfish is dried fish. Where does this allegory come from - I cannot judge

Stokish has been competing lately with Komodo and Houdini and outperforms its rivals in a number of indicators

Much of Stockfish's success is due to its distribution policy. Having created a gain, the developers distribute the version for testing to all users. Perhaps for this reason, there are almost no serious bugs left.

The program is free. The most recent version is figure eight. You can download it here: https://stockfishchess.org/download/

But that's not all. It is difficult to use an engine without an interface for practical purposes .

Skins and client programs

In order to use the capabilities of the engine, to see its work, you need a shell, an interface. A custom chess program (shell) plus an engine (or several) is a ready-made product suitable for human use.

Here are some examples of the best, in my opinion, shells and client programs:

Arena

One of the most famous and powerful programs. Can be used as a user interface, a skin for almost all the best engines

You can download / install on the official website of the Arena.

Chessbase

Perhaps the most advanced analytical program known to the author.

ChessBase provides all the analytical tools you need and can:

  • Work with the databases of games - watch the games played and analyze
  • Search by certain parameters: openings, positions, material ratio, endgames, and more.
  • Upload your games, with comments and cards
  • Analyze by selecting different engines
  • Create player profiles based on databases
  • Print batches and diagrams in various configurations

And also much more.

The latest version of the program is ChessBase-13

Shredder classic 3

One of the best Shredder chess engines complete with an interface.

  • The ability to play both with the engine at different levels, and over the network with real opponents
  • Choice of time controls, the ability to create your own control.
  • Analysis of both parties and positions
  • Customization of the interface: design of the board and figures, etc. figures, and so on.

The full version is not free. To get started, you can download the shareware version.

Chess planet

A specialized program associated with the portal http://chessplanet.ru/, where you can play online, in tournaments, by correspondence, play by correspondence. There are contests and a lot of interesting things.

The client program is installed on the user's computer and provides the ability to play, communicate on the forum, view and analyze games, watch lessons, and more.

There is also a simplified version, when you can play in a browser without installing a client program on your computer.

You can install the client and get acquainted with the portal in more detail

BabasChess

Multilingual interface (I really couldn't find Russian) for playing over the Internet.

Combines ease of use and a fairly wide range of functions. This is what wins you over.

Works on Windows. Also can work on Linux

For training

For novice chess players and for training, in my opinion, it is better to use multidisciplinary chess portals or an online school.

However, there are also standalone programs. For example, you can install on a smartphone:

Teaching chess - from simple to difficult

Something like a navigator in the world of chess. The app will show you the basic rules and give tips on how to improve the game.

The training course contains more hundreds topics. Including basic techniques and typical combinations. More 1000 various examples.

You can read more and install here

Do not believe your eyes

The best chess engines are already partly "humanized" and in terms of position assessment are similar to humans. However, they are also wrong. And it's rude.

Just one example, the simplest one:

The position "on the board" is a draw and this is known to most chess players, not just masters. And it’s not difficult to guess - the black king is sitting in the corner and it’s impossible to smoke him out of there. Neither checkmate nor move a pawn. And pressed in the corner - stalemate.

So, most engines, even the most modern ones, evaluate this position as won for White. Stockfish gives +7 ... If you don’t believe it, you can check it yourself.

In fact, I could give a dozen of such examples, when the machine is grossly mistaken in assessing the position. Why this happens, I do not know, but the fact is the fact.

Hence the conclusion: deifying the computer, it will not be superfluous to remember that "there is a hole in the old woman" ... It turns out that not only we check our calculations using a computer. Sometimes a reverse process is required. That's it.

Become a grandmaster or just chill out on a rainy day with healthy competition.

The best chess game was played between Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzky in 1851, but the best video chess games are a different story. Although the rules are simple, this game is a real test of foresight, tactics and simple patience. There are several reasons to play computer chess - recreation, learning, and just a desire to compete - and therefore there are different types of programs and games.

This text will introduce you to the world of computer chess, regardless of whether you want to play online or offline from time to time, seriously study the skill of the first moves or analyze historical matches.

One engine will be of little use, because they have no user interface - only the console. To play against a chess engine or analyze games, you need to link it up with a GUI - and luckily there are plenty of free ones. Most come with engines right away, so you can kill two birds with one stone.

- even beginners will understand, and therefore you can start with this program. There are engines and tools for practice here. The user interface is also pretty self-explanatory, even if you are not familiar with the more advanced features of chess engines.

Arena Chess GUI - can scare newbies more than Lucas Chess, but it has a lot of cool features - for example, support for 19 languages and a version for Linux.

WinBoard is not the nicest GUI, but it is full of functions and has support for chess variations.

- As with the other GUIs on this list, you can play against the engine using SCID, but it is better to use it for quickly organizing and analyzing databases of chess games. It is best to link it with MillionBase in PGN format - or any other database. If you like the interface, you can play chess against PC.

You can play and learn chess without spending a dime - and that's where I would suggest starting, but there are tons of nice little things about the advanced packages that you have to pay for. A high price is charged for the integrity of the instruments and their quality.

Fritz 15 is a legendary chess software. The current engine was created by Wasik Rajlich, developed by Rybka (although you can use it with other engines, both free and commercial). It takes a lot of work to install (damn activation keys!), And the interface is as difficult as any free software, but it has a huge database and a couple of nice features. I especially love Friend Mode, which you play against the PC, but it adjusts to your level. There are not too direct clues - thanks to them you can learn and perfectly understand why one move is better than others.

Fritz 15 also includes a 6 month Playchess.com membership. If you want a complete package and can spend the money, this is a perfectly reasonable choice. It's no easier to use than the free alternatives, so I would look for instructional videos.

If you want to spend less, the Fritz 14 is available, just like the regular $ 20 Fritz running on Fun 13. While the name might seem like it’s simplistic, it’s not - later versions have the same functionality. In addition, you can connect the latest engines.

There is the lesser known but more expensive Hiarcs (although I never had a chance to test it) - advanced databases and toolboxes are presented here.

Only serious chess players or those who would like to develop their own chess engine will want to spend $ 150 on ChessBase 13 Academy or $ 235 on ChessBase 13 Pro. These tools are needed not for playing, but for analyzing chess games.

Fun games based on chess

If you want something different, here are some pure chess or games with the same principle.

Placement is a very clever puzzle game in which you place pieces on the board in such a way that each is protected. It is not very difficult, but beginners can practice this way in the ability to instantly calculate the board.

Knights is another game developed on the principle of chess. Your goal is to move the knights using the classic L-moves to the square of their color on small boards. If this seems easy to you, there are other options.

The original Battle Chess might be a little expensive for a game designed for DosBox. Plus, it takes a lot of time because of the silly, slow animation of moves and battles, but the feeling of nostalgia can be less forgiven.

Chess 2: The Sequel is now slightly easier to recommend. The price has dropped to a paltry $ 6, and the developers have added a couple of nice little things. Although there is practically no way to find a rival online, playing against artificial intelligence is still very cool. The whole point is this: it looks like chess, but there are different pieces (which, of course, behave a little differently) and the conditions for winning. Apart from declaring check and checkmate, you can win by crossing the middle line with the king. This is not a very tough move, but it does require an unusual train of thought from you.

In the age of development of digital technologies, many users forget about mind games, preferring online battles with amazing graphics. But all the same, as before, there is a significant part of the players who do not like this gameplay at all. They are interested in other games, such as chess.

On this page you can download them to your computer or laptop for free and without registration. Below you will find a number of games in Russian and links to download them. Choose what is closer and forward to you, prove to the electronic brain that a living person is still smarter!

Downloading chess for every taste

Below you will find 10 chess-themed games for different tastes. You just need to read our review and choose the one that suits and you like the most. So let's get started.

This is a completely free computer toy that doesn't even need to be installed. You will be confronted with 10 levels of artificial intelligence. Start small and try to overcome them all. Although it will not be so easy for a simple amateur to do this. But all the more interesting!

Grandmaster (Grand Chess)

This free game will suit many people. For users who don't play well enough, the hints here will come in handy. More experienced players will also appreciate the grandmaster. The algorithm playing against you can be fine-tuned. The melodies that sound during the game are also pleasantly pleasing. At the level and the graphic component. You can choose 2D or 3D mode.

Another mini PC game. There is no beautiful graphics or super-intelligent computer intelligence. But there is some kind of charm that makes players, especially beginners, spend many hours playing. But do not hope that it will be quite easy to win directly, no, you will have to fight for victory.

Our next nominee is another free game for people with a not too high level of play (beginners). It is perfect for training on a computer or laptop. This is essentially your new coach.

In addition to a simple rival, you will get a teacher who will show you what to do in certain situations. As a result, the level of the game will grow steadily. The program is small in size, which once again saves space on your hard drive.

Elite Chess

Elite Chess is a chess program that has several interface languages. In addition, there is a rather quick-witted electronic intelligence and a small size of the game.

Chess Titans

This is a miniature analogue of the famous computer program that fought world champions, Fritz. In fact, they simply erased everything unnecessary from here, but most importantly, they left the smart rival.

There is no need to install the game, just unpack the archive and run the file. You can play. Moreover, the program is supported in Russian in any version of Microsoft systems, including Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 / 8.1 and 10.

Download Chess Titans

Queen

Judging by the name, you might think that this is a royal game. However, this would be a slight exaggeration. Nevertheless, decent quality artificial intelligence and the absence of the need to install are the advantages of the application. In the same way as the interface in Russian.

A very good chess simulator, made in Russian, which everyone will like.

Chess for children

Everything is clear from the name. If you decide to accustom your child to intellectual games on the computer from childhood, this is exactly what you need. There is also a comic design, and the inclinations of thinking, etc. A good game for the smallest inhabitants of your house.
